MAKING THE RIGHT MOVES; SOME ADVICE FOR HANDLING THE DETAILS OF HOUSEHOLD RELOCATION

WEST WARWICK, R.I., July 2 /PRNewswire/ -- This summer, families all over the country will pack up their belongings and move to another city. While one-in-five Americans will move from one dwelling to another annually, you can probably expect to do it yourself eleven times during your lifetime. In more than 71 percent of all household moves, women are the key decision makers.
Often, she has many questions: how do I choose a moving company? How much will this move cost? What's the best way to get my belongings packed up and delivered on time with no damage?
"Most people find the time savings and reduced stress of a well- planned, full-service professional move to far outweigh its cost," said David Arpin, president of international household goods carrier Paul Arpin Van Lines. Arpin offers advice for families relocating this summer:

Choosing a Moving Company
Call friends and relatives who have already moved and ask questions; they will be able to give you the best references. When moving out of state, select a mover that is affiliated with a national van line. That way you'll be sure that they're equipped to handle long distance moves.
Make sure an estimator comes to your home to inspect your belongings. While, s/he is there, ask for a copy of the van lines' Carrier Performance Report. This report, compiled annually by the Interstate Commerce Commission (ICC), details estimating, delivery and claims processing performance. Don't base your decision on price alone -- as the saying goes, "You get what you pay for." When selecting a moving company, service should be your top priority.

Moving Costs
Moving with a van line is an expensive proposition and everyone wants to keep costs to a minimum. However, if you are planning a move, you need to keep two things in mind with regard to cost.
First, you are entrusting your possessions to people you don't know. They're going to load your belongings into a truck and drive away. For your own piece of mind, you need to feel that they are professionals, motivated to do a good job. That means that they have to feel that they are making an adequate profit for the work they're doing on your behalf.
Second, don't be fooled by discounts. A higher discount on a non- binding estimate may actually cost you more than a lower discount on a binding, or best price estimate.
Make sure you know the differences between kinds of estimates and what kinds of promises are being made to you. Whichever estimate you receive, get it in writing!

Getting There in One Piece
On many stress scales, moving ranks third -- just behind divorce and death of a loved one. The easiest way to assure a successful move is to plan it carefully. Spread the word early, get organized and plan your packing as soon as the moving date is set.
A good packing job does more than protect your possessions; it can actually make settling into your new home much easier. If you don't have time to pack, you can have your belongings professionally packed by your moving company for an extra cost.
Arpin has developed a consumer information publication, "Moving Made Easier," to help ease the pains of moving -- from planning and organizing a move, to moving special or precious items, to packing and travel tips, to settling in. To receive their free issue of "Moving Made Easier," consumers can write to Moving Made Easier, Paul Arpin Van Lines, P.O. Box 1302, East Greenwich, R.I. 02818-0998.
