Rushed shots, shots taken from awkward positions and squeezing your shots through tight windows can all result in arrows that don't end up exactly where we intended. This is reality; stuff happens. The question then becomes, will your chosen broadhead get the job done when shot placement is less than optimal? If you happen to clip a shoulder blade, will your broadhead stay intact? Are the blades razor sharp out of the pack and durable enough to keep cutting after a rough impact?
As a bowhunter, I believe it is my ethical responsibility to not only fine-tune my bow and practice my form until my arm is ready to fall off but also to select the absolute best gear I can find, based on reliable data and personal experience. When it comes to broadheads, there are more options available these days than ever before. So, narrowing literally hundreds of choices to THE ONE head you will screw onto the end of your arrows can be time-consuming and extremely expensive.

We at Petersen's BOWHL1NTING conduct the most thorough, reliable broadhead test you will find anywhere. We invest hundreds of man-hours, use high-tech test equipment such as the computerized X-Ring Machine and enlist the services of world-class testing experts when we do not have the in-house expertise required to give you the results you need.
This year, we drill down on 14 of the industry's top fixed-blade models and assess their performance in a host of categories such as sharpness, accuracy, penetration, durability, hemorrhage efficiency and more. Remember, this is an important decision, and your choice will have life-or-death consequences in the real world.
Our goal is to objectively test those characteristics critical to the successful completion of a broadhead's mission--killing game quickly. Tests are conducted with materials and processes that result in accurate, unbiased results. Since conducting our first head-to-head broadhead test in 2012, we have built on our experiences year after year and continuously made enhancements and modifications where they benefit the test and, in turn, the reader. We use in-house technology such as the Petersen's BOWHUNTING X-Ring Machine, which is advanced far beyond any commercially available shooting machine, and the Silks Outdoors X-Ring operating software. To create slowmotion video of the broadheads in action--from slicing through sheet metal to crashing into solid rock--we use an IDT high-speed video camera.
Where we did not have the in-house resources to conduct our tests, we sourced world-class testing services from the outside. For example, sharpness testing for all broadhead blades was conducted on a state-of-the-art machine at the Cutlery & Allied Trades Research Association in Sheffield, England. Yes, we ship broadhead blades across the Atlantic each year to bring bowhunters the industry's most reliable sharpness data!
A Mathews NO CAM HTR bow was set up with a 29inch draw length and 65-pound draw weight. It was equipped with a NAP QuikTune 3000 arrow rest and tuned with Easton 5mm FMJ 340 arrows, which we fletched with three, 2-inch Bohning Blazer vanes in a 2-degree, offset configuration. Test arrows were tipped with 100-grain fieldpoints to match the weight of the test broadheads. The bow was secured to the X-Ring Machine and paper-tuned using the test arrows.
PHYSICAL DIMENSIONS: A Mitutoyo 8-inch dial caliper was used to determine the size of each broadhead's cutting diameter, blade length, blade thickness and the length of the head beyond the end of the arrow. Measurements were cross referenced using a digital caliper. Cutting diameter on 3-blade heads was calculated by laying two of the blade tips along one jaw of the calipers and the third on the opposite jaw. That number was divided by 1.5 and then multiplied by 2. Example: Greatest distance is .75/1.5 = .5x2 = 1-inch cutting diameter.
An Easton Digital Grain Scale, calibrated according to the manufacturer's instructions, was used to determine the weight of each individual broadhead. Three separate heads were measured and averaged for a final result.

TOTAL CUTTING POTENTIAL: The ability of a broadhead to cut, and the amount of cutting that takes place, is a factor of its sharpness, cutting diameter and number of blades. With this in mind, we calculate the Total Cutting Potential (TCP) of a head by multiplying the radius by the number of blades. We consider it "potential" because a lost blade in bone or otherwise means you have that much less to do the cutting once the head breaks into the core of the animal. Blade angle is not considered in the TCP since angle does not change the amount of flesh that is cut as long as penetration is equal.
Here are two examples of TCP calculations: A 2-blade, 2-inchcutting-diameter head has a radius of 1 inch. To get the TCP, you multiply the radius by the number of blades, which gives you a TCP of 2 inches. Now, consider a 3-blade head with a cutting diameter of 1.375 inches. The radius is .6875-inch, so you would multiply .6875 by the number of blades, 3. Your TCP would be 2.0625 inches, which means you will cut slightly more than the 2-blade head with a 2-inch cutting diameter.

SHARPNESS: Three blades from each test model (one blade each from three brand-new heads) were sent to CATRA (Cutlery & Allied Trades Research Association) in the United Kingdom to measure blade sharpness with its Razor Edge Sharpness Test (REST) machine. The machine measures the force required, in Newtons, to cut through a rubber test medium. The less force required to cut the rubber, the sharper the blade As a reference point, a shaving razor will typically result in a reading near .3 N. HEMORRHAGE TEST: One of the more entertaining tests in our lineup is the hemorrhage test, so named because it is designed to provide a relative measure of how much bleeding each broadhead will cause. A series of thick plastic bags containing exactly two gallons of red water and marked with a reference line near the bottom. Each bag was also vented to ensure an equal amount of pressure. We then suspended the bags in front of our target and used a Mission SUB-1 XR crossbow to shoot each test head through one of the bags. We used a Nikon D5600 camera to record each shot on video and relied on the frame-by-frame time stamps on the video to calculate the elapsed time between the instant the shot was fired and when the water level matched the reference line on the bag.

HARD-IMPACT TEST: The hard-impact test is designed to simulate the performance of a head after it encounters and passes through a hard material such as bone. We all want to know our broadhead will still do its job and continue cutting even after hitting a rib or shoulder blade. This test was performed at 20 yards, and the impact material was .03-inch sheet metal. A thin, dense foam panel was placed approximately 18 inches behind the metal to "catch" the heads after passing through the metal. High-speed video equipment was used to capture these shots in slow motion. It is worth noting that no head in this year's test suffered more than minimal damage.

PENETRATION: We compared penetration using two kinds of custom-built, block-style targets. One was made of pure foam plates wrapped in plastic film, while the other was a three-material combination of rubber-backed carpet, .03-inchthick sheet metal and foam plates, also wrapped with film.
Each test model was shot three times into each block, with a brand-new head being used for each shot. The depth of penetration was recorded and averaged for a final result. Over the years, many readers have suggested we test broadhead penetration by shooting into deer or even steer carcasses. However, we choose to use manmade materials to maintain the consistent media properties (hardness, firmness, density, etc.) required for valid test results.

ZERO-PENETRATION TEST: The zero-penetration test was a violent test of the broadhead's durability. It was conducted by shooting into the flat surface of a field stone at 20 yards and evaluating the overall condition of the head after impact. FIELDPOINT COMPARISON TEST:
A fieldpoint-tipped arrow was shot from the X-Ring machine at 25 yards to give us a reference point for comparing the broadhead impact points on the target. No additional tuning was performed outside of the initial paper tune, as we did not want to give any one head an advantage. Three shots of each model were averaged to plot the data.
The results of this year's fieldpoint comparison test continue an industrywide trend toward better broadhead accuracy. Considering the fact that fixed-blade broadheads are widely considered more difficult to group than mechanicals, it is noteworthy that NONE of the 14 fixed-blade heads in this year's test varied more than .625-inch from the fieldpoint impact in EITHER windage or elevation. In fact, most of them varied considerably less than that! In fact, as you can see in the chart, we have to magnify the 1-inch scale just to make the impact point of each head visible without landing on top of one another.
So, when it comes to accuracy, the bottom line is that bowhunters shouldn't have much trouble getting any of the broadheads in this year's test to hit where they want them in the field.

G5 did what all successful companies do--move forward and improve. They took a look at their popular Striker broadhead and identified a few areas that could be upgraded. The new Striker V2 features a fully machined, stainless-steel ferrule. The 3 super-sharp Lutz blades are also somewhat different, with a longer tail, contoured belly for a deeper seat and more defined tip structure. ROCKY MOUNTAIN FIRST CUT X
The First Cut X is designed for the high speeds produced by some of today's crossbows. However, it also works well with vertical bows. Main blades are made of stainless steel, measure .04-inch thick, are cut-on-contact design and can be resharpened. Bleeder blades, which are perpendicular to the main blades, are .03-inch thick. Main blades create a 1.125-inch diameter cut, while the bleeders come in at.75-inch diameter. The 100-grain heads are built with a 22/64-inch aluminum ferrule for better fit-up with crossbow bolts. Sik's 100-grain, fixed-blade F4 features laser-welded, stainless-steel construction. The cut-on-contact-style main blade is curved, spans 1.08 inches in length per side and comes in at .04-inch thick. Main blades feature a 37-degree, razor-honed blade angle and create a 1.35-inch cutting diameter. Swhacker enters the fixed-blade broadhead market with its Razor Series, which consists of three 100-grain models that offer different cutting diameters and blade pitch options. The 252 model sports a large, 1.5-inch cutting diameter main blade, which is set at a 59-degree pitch, and a bleeder blade that spans .875-inches. Blades are engineered from solid 420 stainless steel, can be replaced using a special tool and measure .065-inch in thickness, making them twice as thick as most others on the market. Swhacker blades are laser cut, independently ground and hand-stropped to shaving sharpness. It is recommended that the main blades be set at 11,12 or 1 o'clock as a starting point for optimal flight.

Trophy Taker's 4-blade A-TAC is a unique broadhead, featuring a thick, cut-on-contact tip built directly into the ferrule. However, the company says the bleeder blade measures .08-inch thick--more than twice the thickness of most blades on the market. TRUGLO TITANIUM X
Aiming for precision, TruGlo employs CNC machining to build its one-piece, grade 5 titanium ferrules. Titanium is well known for its tensile strength, ruggedness, corrosion resistance and excellent strength-to-weight ratio. The Tru-Cut, one-piece titanium tip works with the Tru-Thru, .031-inch-thick stainless-steel blades to optimize penetration. TruGlo advertises the 3-blade head at a cutting diameter of 1.1875-inch. WAC'EM FIXED 3-BLADE
Wac'Em's 3-Blade broadhead is built on a solid, hardened stainless-steel ferrule. It features the company's patented cut-on-impact tip, which has three sharpened edges that line up with each of the blades. Blade tips lock into a pocket under the chisel tip on the front edge, are seated in a slot on the ferrule and then are secured at the back end with a washer and the arrow. The .027-inch-thick, hardened stainless-steel blades, which form a 1.0325-inch cutting diameter, are replaceable and will sharpen on a flat stone. WASP HAVALON HV
After two years of collaboration, Wasp and Havalon have come together to create the new Havalon HV 3-blade broadhead. Wasp brings its broadhead manufacturing know-how to the table, while Havalon brings its expertise in surgical-edge technology. The 100-grain head is built on an aerodynamic, aerospace-grade aluminum ferrule that is slotted to accept the three blades. Wasp's trademark Stainless Smart Tip (SST) is a trocar-style tip designed to break through bone and enhance penetration. As with all Wasp 3-blade heads, the SST is pressed onto the ferrule under hundreds of pounds of force and aligned to the blades. The .035-inch-thick Havalon blades are surgically sharp and combine for a 1.1875-inch cutting diameter. Blades are replaceable, and Wasp includes six replacement blades in the package.
