MAKE IT A BOND; Shoot-out champion in town for league's big night.

Byline: DAVID LOCKWOOD

SNOOKER'S new Shoot-out champion Nigel Bond is to present prizes when the SMileS Huddersfield Billiards and Snooker Association c e l e b r a t e t h e i r 7 5 t h anniversary.

For the 45-year-old from Darley Dale, in Derbyshire, lifted his profile enormously when he won the Shoot-out tournament in Blackpool.

Bond emerged victorious out of a field of 64, which included most of the top-line pros, and brought him wins over Joe Jogia, Stephen Lee, Rory McLeod, Mark King and Marcus Campbell (putting him through to the final).

And there he went on to beat Gloucester's Robert Milkins 58-24 to lift the pounds 32,000 first prize at the Circus Arena and clinch his first win in a televised tournament for 14 years.

The Shoot-out is a new format, which incorporates a shot clock with frames lasting a maximum of 10 minutes.

"It suited me down to the ground," said Bond, adding: "with a shot clock you've no time to think. You have to go for the first ball you see and knock it in the hole. It stops you thinking about what can go wrong.

"All the players have enjoyed it. It's been a fantastic event. Anybody can win it, as you've seen."

Although ranked outside the world's top 16 these days (he's now 38th), Bond is still a well-known name in snooker circles and Huddersfield's organisers are thrilled to have tempted him to hand out the numerous awards at the Associat i o n's annual presentation on Thursday, May 26, at Golcar Royal British Legion.

Andy Earnshaw, the business development manager from SMileS, who sponsor the League, said: "We have been pleased to sponsor the HBSA during its 75th anniversary year and, in particular, we are looking forward to meeting Nigel Bond at the annual presentation evening."

Huddersfield were renowned for pulling in the big names in the snooker world to play exhibition matches during the billiards and snooker finals week back in the 70s and 80s, when players like Jimmy White, Stephen Hendry, Bill Werbeniuk, Dennis Taylor, John Virgo, Ray Reardon, JamesWattana and others appeared at Slaithwaite Leisure Centre in front of several hundred spectators.

The last top-line star to appear in Huddersfield - with the exception of the late Paul Hunter, who of course practised at Syngenta - was Ronnie O'Sullivan, who appeared at Huddersfield Sports Centre.

But in recent years, top professionals have almost priced themselves out of the market for small league functions, so Bond's appointment is a great boost for Huddersfield.. Huddersfield's retired bobbies had a good day out in Harrogate when John Lee and Derek Hey won the retired snooker and billiards titles in t h e N o r t h E a s t Re g i o n Championships at the Manhattan club.

In only his second week of retirement, Lee beat Hey on a black ball decider in the semi-final of the snooker event, before going on to beat another Huddersfield player, Malcolm Nutbrown in the final.

Hey gained some consolation when he went on to win the billiards competition.

Both winners - who play for New Mill Club in the Huddersfield Open League - now qualify for the National competitions to be held at the Potter Leisure Resort, Hopton-on-Sea in Norfolk, in May.
