 MAJOR VICTORY FOR HOSPITAL WORKERS
LOCAL 250 & KAISER AGREE ON NEW CONTRACT
OAKLAND, Calif., Oct. 31 /PRNewswire/ -- Five percent across the board wage increases each year, for the next three years, highlight a new tentative contract agreement between Local 250, the Hospital & Health Care Workers' Union and Kaiser Permanente, the two largest health care organizations in California.
The agreement was reached after a marathon bargaining session which ended at 5:30 a.m. this morning, Saturday, Oct. 31. The current contract will expire at midnight tonight (Oct. 31).
The new three year contract includes across the board wage increases for all Kaiser workers of five percent each year. There are no takeaways in the contract and there are increased benefits in the companies' retirement program. Other improvements include increased shift differentials and additional increases for licensed and technical classifications. The Local 250 master contract with Kaiser covers 14,000 workers in 31 hospitals and clinics throughout Northern California.
"In these tough economic times, this is a major victory for our members," said Sal Rosselli, president of Local 250. "The Local 250 bargaining committee and Kaiser management have worked hard to negotiate a good contract. The contract shows that Kaiser understands if they are to continue to provide the best in health care, they must also continue to offer the best wage and benefit package to their employees."
Kaiser workers will vote to ratify the contract at 15 Northern California sites next Wednesday (Nov. 4), Thursday (Nov.5) and Friday. Negotiations for the current contract began in August. Local 250 members representing virtually every one of the Kaiser hospitals and clinics represented in the contract negotiations sit on the bargaining committee.
Local 250 represents x-ray technicians, clerical employees, respiratory therapists, dietary workers, housekeepers, laundry workers, licensed vocational nurses, and several other technical classifications.
Local 250, the Hospital & Health Care Workers' Union is the largest union local in California with over 32,000 members. Local 250 is the second largest health care union local in America and is affiliated with the Service Employees International Union of the AFL-CIO.
