MAJOR UPGRADES ON NOVA ALBERTA PIPELINE SYSTEM TO BE COMPLETE BY MAY 21

CALGARY, Alberta, April 27 /PRNewswire/ -- NOVA Corporation of Alberta is in the process of completing several significant system upgrades which will boost the delivery capacity of its Alberta natural gas transportation system. Between April 26 and May 21, piping connections for three new compressor units will be added to NOVA's Alberta Gas Transmission Division (AGTD) pipeline network.
Doing this pipework will temporarily limit the supply of natural gas entering AGTD's pipeline network. The impact of the supply limits will be localized and temporary. The timing of the system upgrades has been carefully planned to minimize the impact on natural gas deliveries.
"There will be some restriction in the ability of suppliers to put gas into our system," said Eric Shelton, AGTD vice president for Customer Service. "However, the impact on the end market will be minimal.
"Every customer on our system has been informed of the pending receipt point limitations for months," Shelton added. "We've coordinated the timing of this major system expansion with a dozen other scheduled maintenance activities planned by our customers. It should also be noted that gas shippers have the opportunity to make up some of the restricted supplies from other points on our system. We're confident that the overall impact on gas supplies is very manageable."
Three supply limitation periods -- related to two sizable system upgrades -- are currently scheduled. These are the largest upgrades of NOVA's 1993 system expansion program. Once these upgrades are completed on May 21 (as currently scheduled), other scheduled system upgrades will be minor in comparison.
System Expansion Dates Local Supply Limitation
 Vetchland 400 line April 26 - May 4 675 million cubic feet
(tie-ins to the per day (about 7 percent
 42-inch Edson of average receipts)
 mainline loop No. 1)
 Knight Station May 10-18 400 mmcf/d (about
(piping and tie-ins) 4 percent of average
 receipts)
 Knight Mainline May 18-21 1250 mmcf/d (about
(tie-in suction and 12 percent of average
 discharge lines) receipts)
Historically, the amount of gas entering the AGTD system tends to be anywhere from 11 percent to 25 percent lower in the summer months than in winter. The largest supply limitation -- at the Knight mainline from May 18 through 21 -- will limit receipts upstream of the Knight compressor station by some 12 percent.
Vetchland is located 190 kilometers northwest of Calgary near the town of Rocky Mountain House. The Vetchland upgrade is required to add two new compressor units. Knight is located 200 kilometers west of Edmonton near the town of Edson. The Knight upgrades are required to install one new compressor unit.
