MAIL BOXES ETC. TO OPEN IN BRAZIL,
ITS FIRST EXPANSION INTO SOUTH AMERICA
SAN DIEGO, July 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Mail Boxes Etc. (MBE) (NASDAQ: MAIL) today announced the expansion of its worldwide network of franchised operations into South America for the first time, with the sale of a Master License for Brazil, the largest country in South America.
The new master licensee forecasts the eventual sale of 300 franchises in Brazil, whose population exceeds 150 million. The MBE franchise sales campaign is scheduled to be introduced next month at an international franchising conference in Sao Paulo, Brazil's largest city and its major commercial, financial and industrial center.
The first Brazilian MBE Center is scheduled to open in December in Ipanema, the fashionable commercial and residential beachside neighborhood of Rio de Janeiro, where MBE Brazil's headquarters will be located.
"Brazil is obviously an important and appealing market for MBE," said MBE founder and chief executive officer Tony DeSio, who added that "MBE has more than 45 franchises in service in Mexico, over 25 in Canada and our presence in Brazil extends our concept throughout North and South America."
MBE plans further extensive international expansion. MBE Master Licenses for France, the United Kingdom and Germany were awarded in April.
The Brazilian Master Licensee is the Adriano da Silva family of Uberaba, which has active interests in real estate and ranching in Brazil. Jairo Adriano da Silva Filho of Sao Paulo state and his sister, Sandra Neves Adriano, of Rio de Janeiro, will be directly involved in the operations of MBE in Brazil.
"The MBE concept is ideally suited for Brazil, where it will complement postal services," said Mr. da Silva, adding, "the convenience of one-stop shopping for multiple services is extremely useful for Brazilian consumers and small businesses."
Mail Boxes Etc. is a San Diego-based holding company, whose operating subsidiary, Mail Boxes Etc. USA Inc., is the nation's largest franchisor of neighborhood Service Centers specializing in postal, business and communications services with more than 1,700 Centers operating throughout the United States. Internationally, in addition to Brazil, MBE operates in eight countries: Canada, Germany, Jamaica, Japan, France, Mexico, Spain and the United Kingdom.
