MAIL BOXES ETC. POSTS RECORD FIRST QUARTER RESULTS

 SAN DIEGO, Aug. 17 /PRNewswire/ -- Mail Boxes Etc.(R) (MBE) (NASDAQ: MAIL) reported that, for the 37th consecutive quarter, its quarterly earnings from operations exceeded those of the same quarter in the previous year.
 A.W. (Tony) DeSio, the company's president and chief executive officer, announced earnings-per-share for the first quarter ended July 31, 1993, increased 23 percent to $.16 from $.13. Net income rose to $1.9 million compared to $1.5 million in the prior year's first quarter, an increase of 26 percent. Royalties from MBE Centers located in the United States were up 27 percent compared to the prior year's first quarter. Revenues from franchise and master license sales in the first quarter were $2.5 million, an increase of 4 percent over the prior year's first quarter.
 Master licenses sold in the first quarter included the countries of Argentina, Chile, Paraguay, Uruguay, Turkey and the Netherlands Antilles. The master license for Turkey includes the countries of Azerbaijan and Northern Cyprus; the master license for the Netherlands Antilles includes Aruba and Suriname.
 According to DeSio, "This record first quarter earnings was the result of a strong 27 percent increase in domestic royalty revenues. In addition, these revenues resulted from a significant 16 percent increase in same-store sales and continued expansion of our domestic and international network of MBE Centers."
 Mail Boxes Etc., a San Diego-based company, is the world's largest franchiser of postal, business and communications service centers. MBE makes its franchise network available to national and international companies as an alternative to establishing or expanding their own service distribution systems. At the close of business on July 31, 1993, MBE had 1,960 MBE Centers operating in 50 states, plus the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico, and has entered into master license agreements with licensees for the development of MBE Centers in 21 countries internationally. As of July 31, 1993, there were 121 MBE Centers operating outside the United States.
