MAIL BOXES ETC. CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER TONY DESIO ELECTED TO BOARD OF THE INTERNATIONAL FRANCHISE ASSOCIATION

SAN DIEGO, March 5 /PRNewswire/ -- A leading California franchise industry executive, A. W. (Tony) DeSio, president and chief executive officer of Mail Boxes Etc. (NASDAQ: MAIL) (MBE) has been elected to the board of directors of the International Franchise Association, the largest association of franchise companies in the world.
Co-founder of Mail Boxes Etc., a San Diego-based company and the nation's largest franchiser of neighborhood service centers specializing in postal, business and communications services, DeSio believes the franchise industry can be a driving force in helping our economy turn around and in creating new jobs.
"Last year, the franchise industry maintained millions of jobs, including more than 100,000 new positions, and is credited with generating about one-third of the country's retail sales," said DeSio.
In California alone, DeSio estimates the franchising industry accounted for 35 percent of all jobs in the state with similar proportions in other key service industries.
DeSio cautions that well-intentioned, but unnecessary government regulation, could have a stifling effect on the franchising industry's potential for growth and job creation.
"Franchising has proven to be an effective use of capital to develop entrepreneurial businesses at a time when capital for new business investment is scarce," said DeSio.
"Self-regulation, beginning with the IFA, can best serve the industry and create an environment where individual franchise owners are protected and the industry can flourish," DeSio added. "The IFA's Franchise Advisory Council, for example, enables individual franchisees to participate in forming IFA policy," said DeSio.
Mail Boxes Etc. is a San Diego-based holding company, whose operating subsidiary, Mail Boxes Etc. USA Inc., is the world's largest franchiser of neighborhood service centers with more than 1,900 centers in the United States. Internationally, Mail Boxes Etc. has entered into agreements with master licensees in Australia, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Jamaica, Mexico, New Zealand, Spain and the United Kingdom.
