MAIL BOXES ETC. ANNOUNCES RECORD FOURTH QUARTER AND FULL YEAR NET INCOME

SAN DIEGO, June 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Mail Boxes Etc.(R) (MBE) (NASDAQ: MAIL) announced today record net income for the fourth quarter ending April 30, 1993 of $1.725 million compared to $1.467 million in FY 92's fourth quarter, an increase of 18 percent. Revenues for the fourth quarter ending April 30, 1993 were $9.294 million, down 7 percent as compared to FY 92's record fourth quarter revenues of $10.003 million.
The company noted that quarter-to-quarter comparisons can be influenced by the timing of major master license sales. Fiscal 1992 fourth quarter results included a record $2.1 million master license sales whereas there were none during the fourth quarter FY 93.
For the full fiscal year ending April 30, 1993, revenues increased 9.3 percent to $39.347 million as compared to $36.014 million for the prior fiscal year. Net income increased 26 percent to a record $6.883 million from $5.460 million, and earnings per share rose 22 percent from $.46 in FY 92 to $.56 in FY 93.
Same-store sales were up 15.7 percent in the fourth quarter of 1993, compared to the same quarter in 1992. For the full fiscal year ended April 30, 1993, same-store sales were up 16.5 percent compared to the prior year.
During fiscal 1993, a record 334 domestic franchises were sold, bringing the total number of franchises open or in the process of opening in the U.S.A. to over 2,100. In that same period, MBE master licenses were sold in Australia, New Zealand, Italy, and Brazil.
Ninety-six individual franchises were sold by international master licensees in FY 93. This brings the total number of MBE Centers open or in the process of opening worldwide to approximately 2,200.
"Our record results can be attributed to the growth of our network and an increase in same-store sales, which boosted our royalties in the fourth quarter by 31 percent and for the full year by 24 percent," said Tony DeSio, MBE's president and chief executive officer.
"In addition, we benefited from highly focused marketing activities, including two major national advertising and promotional campaigns," said DeSio, who added that "MBE's business has proven to be remarkably `recession resilient.' In this challenging economic environment we have still been able to grow impressively."
Mail Boxes Etc. is the world's largest franchisor of neighborhood service centers. Internationally, Mail Boxes Etc. has entered into agreements with master licensees in Australia, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Jamaica, Mexico, New Zealand, Spain and the United Kingdom.
MBE makes its network available to national and international companies as an alternative to establishing or expanding their own service distribution systems.
