MAGMA COPPER RECEIVES FAVORABLE DETERMINATION ON ROBINSON FROM BLM

TUCSON, Ariz., Feb. 24 /PRNewswire/ -- Magma Copper Co. (NYSE: MCU) announced today that the Ely District Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has issued a Finding Of No Significant Impact (FONSI) for Magma's proposed re-development of the Robinson Mining District near Ely, Nev., as described in a Mining Plan of Operations and an Environmental Assessment document.
Company officials stated that they had worked with a number of interested parties in connection with their submissions to the BLM in order to identify and address any concerns these groups might have. However, the final approval for the project will not occur until the public review has been completed.
Harry Smith, president of Magma Nevada Mining Co. and a vice president of Magma Copper, added, "Once the BLM's findings are finalized, we expect that they will approve our plan of operations. We also expect to receive our state permits in the next few months enabling us to proceed with the development of the Robinson project. If all goes well over the next several months, we will be able to stay on our proposed production schedule." The company has previously disclosed that production from the Robinson District could begin during the fourth quarter of 1994.
 J. Burgess Winter, president and chief executive officer of Magma, stated, "We are delighted with the BLM's issuance of the FONSI. This is a major step towards the re-development of this historic mining district." The Robinson District has been a minerals producer since 1868 and contains abundant copper and gold reserves that will increase Magma's production and decrease its costs.
Magma Copper Co., one of the largest primary copper producers in the United States, produces high-quality copper cathode and rod for sale to customers worldwide. Magma also has operations in San Manuel, Miami, Superior and Humboldt, Ariz. Magma Metals Co., a wholly owned subsidiary, operates Magma's smelting and refining complex, located in San Manuel, and conducts the company's marketing and sales activities. Corporate headquarters are in Tucson.
