MAGMA COPPER ANNOUNCES BLM TO CONDUCT ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT STATEMENT ON ROBINSON PROJECT

TUCSON, Ariz., June 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Magma Copper Co.(NYSE: MCU) announced that the Nevada Bureau of Land Management (BLM) will conduct an environmental impact statement (EIS) to analyze the proposed re- development of the company's Robinson property near Ely, Nev. The BLM stated that the EIS process will move ahead quickly, should minimize additional appeals and can be completed in less time than the administrative appeals process.
This action follows the company's earlier announcement of an appeal challenging the BLM's issuance of a Finding Of No Significant Impact (FONSI) on the copper and gold project.
 J. Burgess Winter, Magma's president and chief executive officer, commented: "The EIS process will somewhat delay the project start-up which was scheduled for late 1994. However, the extent of the delay cannot yet be determined. Meanwhile, we will continue with our detailed engineering and a revision of the operating plan which will include increased production at lower costs than originally indicated in the feasibility study."
The Robinson Mining District, founded in 1908, has been a long- standing copper producer. Magma acquired a 100 percent working interest in the property in October 1991. According to a feasibility study completed by the company in 1992, the Robinson project will produce approximately 125 million pounds of copper and 86,500 ounces of gold per year over a 16-year mine life.
According to Winter, the project is expected to employ 450 people, at least 60 percent of whom will come from the local community of 4,500 people. The property has tremendous exploration potential which could extend the life of the project well into the 21st century.
Magma Copper Co., one of the largest primary copper producers in the United States, produces high-quality copper cathode and rod for sale to customers worldwide. Magma has operations in San Manuel, Miami, Superior, Ariz., and Ely, Nev. Magma Metals Co., a wholly owned subsidiary, operates Magma's smelting and refining complex located in San Manuel, and conducts the company's marketing and sales activities. Corporate headquarters are in Tucson.
