MAGIC LINE'S CONSUMER RESEARCH IN INDIANA SHOWS POPULARITY OF ATMS

DEARBORN, Mich., Nov. 29 /PRNewswire/ -- Recent 1993 consumer research conducted by Magic Line, Inc., the new super-regional automated teller machine (ATM) network serving Indiana, Michigan, Illinois and Ohio, reveals that ATM usage is popular among Indiana financial institution customers because they consider it the most convenient and easy way to bank and obtain cash.
"Trends indicate consumers are busier than ever and want an easy, hassle-free lifestyle. Our study shows that the more we do to make their banking easier, quicker and convenient, the more consumers will use ATM's," said Thomas E. Hartman, Indiana network manager of Magic Line.
The comprehensive survey profiles the differences of ATM users and non-users among 596 Indiana adults over the age of 18, who have checking accounts. The goal of the research is to provide Magic Line with information to best serve the cardholders of participating Magic Line financial institutions in Indiana.
 The major results were:
-- 53 percent of the sample have an ATM card and 38 percent use it at least once a month.
-- Of those without an ATM card, 54.8 percent said that they've never been offered one; however half would obtain a card if it was offered to them.
-- 42.7 percent of respondents picked ATMs as their first choice for obtaining cash.
-- The most important reason cited for obtaining an ATM card is that it makes getting cash easier when the financial institution is closed or when a customer is not near their financial institution.
-- Only 66.8 percent of consumers are aware that it is possible to use ATM cards in ATMs almost anywhere in the country.
-- 88 percent of cardholders surveyed say there are enough ATMs available, with 74 percent saying "there are ATMs close to where they live, work or shop" and 69.3 percent said that they "drive by ATMs on a regular basis."
The statewide research was conducted by Magic Line, Inc., prior to the recent formation of the Midwest's largest electronic funds transfer (EFT) network, when the MoneyMover(R) network in Indiana joined Magic Line in November. Magic Line is headquartered in Dearborn, with offices in both Michigan and Indiana.
