MAGELLAN PETROLEUM ANNOUNCES DINGO APPRAISAL WELL TO BE ABANDONED
HARTFORD, Conn., Jan. 22 /PRNewswire/ -- Magellan Petroleum Corporation (NASDAQ: MPET) said today the latest appraisal well at the Dingo Gas field, in central Australia's Amadeus Basis, has encountered salt-water in the reservoir formation.
The company said its subsidiary, Magellan Petroleum Australia Limited, had drilled the well (Dingo No. 4) to a depth of 10,108 feet, and had entered the upper portion of the objective Arumbera sandstone formation when the water was encountered. No gas flows were recorded.
A Magellan spokesman said the well evidently intersected the reservoir rock below the water -- gas contact point, and that the well will be abandoned after logging operations are completed. He also said that, while the field's proved reserves are not affected by this development, there will be a reduction in reserves assigned to the probable and possible categories.
The Dingo field, currently shut-in, has two productive wells with a combined output of about 4.5 million cubic feet per day, the spokesman said.
