MACROVISION SCRAMBLES ASIAN BROADCASTERS

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., Aug. 16 /PRNewswire/ -- Macrovision's Video Encryption Technology Group announced today the delivery of VES-TP scrambling systems to TV-3 Malaysia and two Indonesian networks, Rajawali Citra Televisi Indonesia and Surya Citra Televisi. All three networks are using VES-TP encoders and decoders to secure their network programming feeds transmitted via the Palapa satellite system to regional affiliates and rebroadcast facilities.
Throughout much of Asia, broadcasters are installing scrambling systems in their transmission operations to protect the exclusivity of their locally produced programming as well as gain access to international programming libraries and packages. In many cases, U.S. program suppliers and film studios require the scrambling of satellite transmissions of their program materials to protect business interests in other markets covered by a satellite's footprint.
The VES-TP is a high-security, video and audio scrambling system for professional broadcast applications. The system includes 9-bit digital video processors and Hi-Fi audio components, including dbx noise reduction, and is available in PAL and NTSC format. The VES-TP can be operated completely from the encoder front panel keypad and requires no ancillary equipment for standard operation.
"With the VES-TP encoder priced significantly lower than competing products, the small- to medium-sized broadcasters around the world now have an affordable solution to the pirating of their satellite distribution. Secure distribution channels allows these broadcasters access to a wider selection of programming sources and suppliers," said Whit Jackson, Macrovision's vice president of Video Encryption Technologies.
Macrovision Corp. develops technologies for the protection of electronically transmitted and prerecorded video programs from unauthorized viewing or copying. The company offers products and services for the home video, pay-per-view, cable, satellite and corporate communications markets.
