MACROMEDIA AND THE 3DO COMPANY REACH AGREEMENT TO BUNDLE TOOLS AND LICENSE DIRECTOR FILE FORMAT

SAN JOSE, Calif., March 30 /PRNewswire/ -- Macromedia(TM), the leading independent multimedia software company, announced today an agreement with The 3DO Company to bundle Macromedia tools in the 3DO Authoring Toolkit and to license the Macromedia Director file format for use with the 3DO Interactive Multiplayer.
The agreement calls for 3DO to bundle Macromedia Director, MacroModel and Three-D with the Authoring Toolkits which 3DO sells to its developers. These products give 3DO developers 3D graphics and authoring tools to more efficiently create multimedia prototypes and productions for the 3DO environment.
Separately, 3DO is licensing the Macromedia Director file format to create data extractors for the media and logic from Director-based productions. These extractors are the first step toward enabling 3DO developers to play back Director files on the 3DO Interactive Multiplayer, giving new and existing Director-based titles a consumer platform for distribution.
"Macromedia's tools are widely used in the industry and are ideal for inclusion in the 3DO Authoring Toolkit," said Bill Duvall, senior vice president of software at The 3DO Company.
"Macromedia's alliance with 3DO underscores our commitment to bring multimedia applications to the widest possible audience including the consumer market," said John C. (Bud) Colligan, Macromedia's president and CEO. "The combination of our tools and 3DO's breakthrough Interactive Multiplayer will bring exciting new titles to this platform in 1993 and beyond."
The 3DO Company is a privately held company dedicated to establishing a new standard for interactive multimedia. Investors include Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., the world's largest consumer electronics manufacturer and parent of Panasonic, National, Quasar and Technics; AT&T, one of the world's leading communications and computer companies; Time Warner, the largest media company in the world and second largest cable operator in the United States; MCA, a major entertainment company; Electronic Arts, the leading entertainment software publisher; and Silicon Valley venture capital firm, Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers.
