MACROMEDIA, PARAMOUNT PUBLISHING ANNOUNCE STRATEGIC ALLIANCE TO SUPPORT MULTIMEDIA COURSEWARE DEVELOPMENT FOR EDUCATION

SAN JOSE, Calif., June 21 /PRNewswire/ -- Macromedia(R), the leading independent supplier of multimedia software products, and Prentice Hall, a division of Paramount Publishing, today announced plans to create multimedia-based interactive learning solutions for all levels of education.
The two companies will work together on a set of initiatives to help learning professionals make use of new multimedia technologies. The first joint initiative, "Authorware Academic," is a textbook/software bundle that includes an introductory version of "Authorware Professional" and value-added templates for creating lecture-support and interactive learning applications. "Authorware Professional" is Macromedia's industry-standard authoring tool for creating rich interactive-learning applications on Macintosh and Windows-based PCs. Aggressively priced for education, "Authorware Academic" will introduce faculty and students to instructional design concepts, while the templates and models will enable more productive use of "Authorware." Subsequent initiatives will result in lecture-support materials tied to Prentice Hall textbooks and publication of stand-alone courseware.
"Macromedia is committed to making multimedia accessible and affordable to consumers," said John C. (Bud) Colligan, president and chief executive officer at Macromedia. "For this industry to grow and for the promise of interactive learning to be fully realized, we must move multimedia beyond the domain of the professional developer. Prentice Hall's editorial know-how and marketing muscle will help us realize these goals."
"There has been a lot of multimedia talk in educational publishing, but it's been more talk than usable product," said Edward H. Stanford, president of Prentice Hall's College Division. "We wanted to be the first publisher to deliver quality applications and a tool to allow instructors to customize courseware at a price that encourages wide- scale integration. Macromedia was a natural partner for us because its products are powerful, easy to use and are recognized as the industry standards on both Macintosh and Windows platforms. This venture represents the next logical step in our technology strategy."
Macromedia is the leading cross-platform software company supplying products and services to multimedia developers. The company's flagship products include: "Authorware(R) Professional(TM)," the premier multiplatform authoring tool for interactive learning; "Macromedia Director(R)," the premier authoring tool for multimedia production; and "MacroModel(TM)", the next-generation 3D modeling tool for multimedia, graphics and product design.
Prentice Hall is a division of Paramount Publishing, the publishing operation of Paramount Communications Inc. (NYSE: PCI), America's leading publisher of educational materials from textbooks to computer- based learning systems and has significant operations serving the consumer and business, technical and professional publishing markets.
