MACHINISTS ISSUE TEXT OF NEW YORK CITY COUNCIL RESOLUTION ON ALITALIA

NEW YORK, Nov. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers issued the following text of a resolution passed unanimously yesterday by the New York City Council:
 Resolution No. 1687
Resolution by the City Council calling upon Alitalia Airlines to return to the bargaining table and end the lockout of its employees.
By the Speaker (Council Member Vallone) and Council Members DeMarco, Sabini, DiBrienza, Albanese and Ognibana:
Whereas, Alitalia Airlines informed its employees that they intended to contract out cargo handlers' and traffic agents' work at their John F. Kennedy International Airport facility; and
Whereas, These employees who are presently amongst the lowest paid of all airline employees would lose their jobs to a non-union company; and
Whereas, Alitalia proposed an alternative to the union of a 40 percent reduction in pay and benefits; and
Whereas Alitalia is presently designated as the official airline of New York State to Italy; and
Whereas, It would not be appropriate considering the history of the labor movement in New York State to continue this designation that has been bestowed on Alitalia if bargaining does not resume; and
Whereas, Alitalia which has a strong following in the Italian community in the metropolitan area would be enhancing their reputation by returning to the bargaining table and attempting to reach a settlement that is fair to both sides; now therefore, be it
Resolved, That the City Council calls upon Alitalia Airlines to return to the bargaining table and end the lockout of its employees.
