MACHINISTS' UNION RATIFIES NEW AGREEMENT WITH THE NEW YORK TIMES

NEW YORK, Jan. 17 /PRNewswire/ -- The membership of the International Association of Machinists District 15, the union whose members maintain and repair production equipment at The New York Times (AMEX: NYT), today ratified an agreement with the newspaper that extends to the year 2000, The Times announced.
The contract, as previously announced by The Times on Dec. 10, 1992, covers The Times's production facilities in Manhattan and Edison, N.J., where a new state-of-the-art color printing and distribution facility is replacing an older plant in Carlstadt, N.J. The Edison facility is responsible for producing the Sunday newspaper and a portion of the weekday paper.
The Times has been seeking long-term agreements with all of its production unions in connection with the opening of its Edison facility.
The details of the agreement were not released.
