 MACARTHUR PARK ANNOUNCES WINNERS OF 1992 ZINFANDEL JUDGING
 PALO ALTO, Calif., Sept. 25 /PRNewswire/ -- The winners of MacArthur Park's annual Zinfandel Judging were announced today. This year, the unusually high quality of the entries prompted the judges to award multiple medals in each category. Ridge garnered two gold medals, including one "Best of Show" for its 1990 Lytton Springs Zinfandel. From a field of 25 entries, top honors were awarded to the following wines, listed with selections from the judges' tasting notes:
 GOLD
 Ridge, Lytton Springs, 1990 -- "great balance, ripe berries, cedar, bright violets" -- Best of Show
 Ridge, Geyserville, 1990 -- "rich ripe fruit, lush, plump, great"
 Quivira, Dry Creek Valley, 1990 -- "raspberry, violets, rich berries, elegant, good tannins"
 SILVER
 Burgess, Napa, 1989 -- "nice structure, cherries, smokey, fragrant"
 Deloach, Sonoma, 1990 -- "raspberry, berry, lovely cherry, fruit and black pepper"
 Elyse, Napa, 1990 -- "friendly, lively, rich and ripe, brilliant violet"
 BRONZE
 Dry Creek, Dry Creek Valley, 1990 - "cassis, soft cherry, good long aromas"
 Frog's Leap, Napa 1990 - "plummy, rose petals, classy peppery"
 Hidden Cellars, Mendocino, 1990 - "cherry, tasty, sturdy, black raspberry, peppery"
 Kendall-Jackson, Vintners Reserve, California, 1990 - "lots of black pepper, meaty, firm tannins"
 Whaler, Flagship, Mendocino, 1990 - "cherry, complex, rich style, big and bold, powerful"
 The winners were selected by a distinguished panel of judges including Angela Freire (associate editor, Wine & Spirits Magazine), Janet Dyer, (wine manager, Juillard-Alpha), Peter Marks (wine buyer, Draeger's Market), Susan Korol Pey (director of wine & beverage, Spectrum Foods), Ann and Larry Walker (food and wine writers, Bay Food, SF Chronicle), and renowned zinfandel experts Wilfred Wong (Bay Food, Wine & Spirits, Ashbury Market) and Tom Elliot (Northwest Wines). All entries are currently available to the public through retail outlets and were judged on characteristics of overall quality; varietal representation, balance and drinkability.
 The judging of current releases of zinfandels is an annual element of the MacArthur Park Wine Festival. Many of the winning zinfandels will be featured at the Wine Festival on Oct. 3. In addition, 85 California wineries will be pouring more than 200 wines to be accompanied by a feast of MacArthur Park favorites including the restaurant's award-winning, oakwood-smoked, barbecued baby back ribs.
 The eleventh annual MacArthur Park Wine Festival will be held on Saturday, Oct. 3, from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the grounds surrounding MacArthur Park. Tickets are $35 per person and include a commemorative tasting glass and unlimited wine and food tastings. Advance tickets are recommended and are available by telephone and at the restaurant. Wine Festival proceeds benefit the Senior Day Health Program, a program of the Senior Coordinating Council of Palo Alto.
