MAC NETWORK AND STAR BANK SIGN LETTER OF INTENT

WILMINGTON, Del., Sept. 21 /PRNewswire/ -- Money Access Service (MAC) and Star Banc Corporation (NASDAQ-NMS: STRZ) announced today they have signed a letter of intent which will enable Star Bank to join the MAC automated teller machine network.
Under the terms of the proposed agreement, Star Banc Corporation and the MAC network will form a strategic alliance which will allow Star to market MAC network services in conjunction with its correspondent banking services to current Tellerific customers, and to other financial institutions in defined markets.
Star and the 46 members of its Tellerific network would represent 435,000 cardholders and nearly 300 Automated Teller Machines (ATM).
"We are very pleased to be joining the MAC network as it will provide our customers with increased ATM access at more than 13,000 ATMs throughout 16 states, as well as more than 18,000 retail locations which accept ATM cards for the payment of purchases," remarked Gary Kocher, executive vice president of Star Banc Corporation.
"It is very exciting to see the rapidly increasing number of locations, especially supermarkets and gas stations, that now accept MAC cards for payment."
John Beran, MAC Midwest manager, said, "The significance of this agreement exceeds mere geographic definition. While it is an important achievement in terms of the network's expansion in the midwest market, an affiliation with a financial institution of Star Bank's stature has a positive impact on both the continued growth of the MAC network as a whole and our ability to deliver state-of-the-art EFT (Electronic Funds Transfer) products and services to consumers."
The agreement with Star is the most recent in a series of achievements for the MAC network as it continues to expand its presence in the Midwest. In August, the MAC network reached an agreement with Money Station, providing the opportunity for mutual access to each other's network for all participating financial institutions. Later that same month, Liberty National Bancorp and the MAC network formed a strategic alliance which will allow Liberty National to market MAC network services to other financial institutions in Kentucky and a portion of southern Indiana.
The MAC network, together with Star, will provide transaction switching, ATM driving and gateway services for Star, its affiliates and participating correspondent institutions. Star will remain the focal point for MAC services, such as customer service, account management, card authorization services and other EFT services as they are developed. Star and its Tellerific members will continue to have access to Money Station. It is anticipated that Tellerific cardholders will have access to the MAC network by the end of the year.
Star Bank joins other key MAC members which also operate in the greater Cincinnati area -- Bank One, Liberty National of Louisville, Ky., PNC Bank and Society Bank.
Star Banc Corporation, the parent company of Star Bank, was recently named to "America's Finest Companies" and "America's Strongest Companies" lists by The Financial Training Group of Charlotte, N.C., which publishes investment guides of publicly traded U.S. companies. For 1993, Star Banc ranked as one of the nation's top 500 companies in the categories of assets and profits by Forbes Magazine. Additionally, Business Week magazine listed Star as one of the top 1000 companies in the United States according to market value. Star Banc Corporation is a multi-state bank holding company, incorporated in Ohio, and currently operates 200 Star Bank offices in Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana.
The MAC network currently has more than 1,450 participating financial institutions and 28 million cardholders in 16 states, primarily in the Mid-Atlantic and Midwest regions. It is the top electronic funds transfer network in total switch transactions and a leading provider of point-of-sale services. MAC is a registered trademark of Money Access Service Inc., a subsidiary of Electronic Payment Services, Inc.
