TRECE MARTIRES CITY, Cavite -- Officials tagged as "high" the number of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) cases in the province as an updated figure from the National HIV Registry showed at least 321 are HIV-positive throughout Cavite. As this developed, an ordinance creating the Cavite Multi-Sectoral STI (Sexually Transmitted Infections), HIV and AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome) Program was filed before the Sangguniang Panglalawigan (Provincial Board). Ordinance 001-2014 would check individuals afflicted and strengthen further the activity scope and program for the prevention, control and management of the virus. (Anthony Giron)
CAMP GEN. MIGUEL MALVAR, Batangas City -- The warden of the Batangas Provincial Jail in Barangay Cuta, here, is "in hot water" after failing to report the suicide of an inmate facing drug charges last weekend. In a "very delayed report" to Senior Superintendent Omega Jireh Deocares Fidel, Police Provincial Office (PPO) director, the warden identified the suicide as Andy Manalo of Barangay Sampaloc, Talisay, Batangas, whose body was discovered by his own wife when she made a conjugal visit at his Cell No. 4 at the jail last January 18. Fidel, however, wants an explanation on why Jail Warden Renato Calingasan only reported it on the night of January 21. For his part, Calingasan said: "I immediately called Provincial Administrator Victor Reyes to report the case." (Vicky Aclan Florendo)
FORT RAMON MAGSAYSAY, Nueva Ecija -- A blood-letting activity dubbed "Dugo ng Buhay" was conducted recently at the Kaugnay Officers Clubhouse, here, raising a total of 32,400 cc of fresh blood from 90 donors. The activity was organized and participated in by the 7thInfantry (Kaugnay) Division commanded by Maj. Gen, Hernando DCA Iriberri, and the Japan Association of Novo Ecijanos (JANE) headed by Miss Mari "Mayang" Bernabe-Nihei, and practicing newsmen from the Central Luzon Media Association. (Mar T. CAMP BADO DANGWA, Benguet -- An employee of the Department of Public Works and Highways-Abra Engineering District (DPWH-AED) was arrested for shooting two men drinking at another table inside the MS Disco Bar in Barangay Zone 5, Bangued, Abra the other night. Senior Superintendent Benjamin M. Lusad, Abra Police Provincial Office (PPO) director, said responding police disarmed Junie Viste Balmaceda, of Lacub, Abra, of his .45-caliber pistol while his victims - Romel Cabanting Stock, 30, and Lester L. Bayongan, 30, were taken to the Abra Provincial Hospital. The shooting stemmed from a drunken altercation between Balmaceda and the victims. (Zaldy C. Comanda)
TRECE MARTIRES CITY, Cavite -- A special group in Cavite called the Quadricentennial Committee that is looking into events, as well as culture, long before General Emilio F. Aguinaldo and the revolutionaries came to the forefront of the province's history as part of preparations for the 400th anniversary of the founding of Cavite. The Committee, created for the ongoing Cavite's 400 Years Founding Anniversary celebration undertaking, is chaired by 7th District Board Member Irene D.P. Bencito. In 1571, Spanish colonizers have settled in Cavite and founded the port and city of the province to fortify the first line of defense for the City of Manila. (Anthony Giron)
CALAPAN CITY, Oriental Mindoro -- A three-day Mindoro Biodiversity Conservation Foundation, Inc. (MBCFI) "photo safari" kicks off today at the Naujan Lake National Park and MUFRC Experimental Forest. The activity is conducted in cooperation with the Wild Bird Photographers of the Philippines, Inc. (WBPP). Participating photographers will capture wild life images in their natural habitat and natural landscapes to be used in developing materials for conservation awareness-raising programs of MBCFI, Department of Environment and Natural Resources, and local governments for the coming celebration of World Wetlands Day on February 3 and Earth Day 2014 in April.
