Lucille Marshall Babbitt, 87.

LENOX Lucille Marshall Babbitt, 87, of Lenox, passed away peacefully on Thursday, September 22, 2011 in Webster, Mass. Lucy, as she was called by nearly everyone who knew her, was born on October 6, 1923 in Henderson, Kentucky, daughter of George and Lura Marshall. While volunteering in the USO during the Second World War, she met her future husband, the late Frederick Babbitt, who at the time was stationed at Camp Breckinridge, Kentucky. They fell in love and were married in Pittsfield on March 16, 1946, shortly after Mr. Babbitt returned from serving his country in Europe.

Lucy and "Chick", as Mr. Babbitt was known to his friends, lived in Pittsfield and Lanesboro before moving to Lenox in 1961, where they spent the rest of their days.

Lucy was an avid gardener, and was renowned for her skill at growing and arranging flowers, which she did both professionally and as a hobby. She received many accolades for her flower arrangements, including a large number of blue ribbons from the many flower shows in which she participated. Lucy was a charter member of the Lenox Academy Garden Club, and an active participant at the Berkshire Botanical Garden in Stockbridge.

Lucy was a member of the Church on the Hill in Lenox for nearly fifty years, serving as a deaconess several times and also serving on the Flower Committee for much of that time, providing beautiful arrangements for countless Sunday services, weddings, funerals, and other occasions.

Lucy was also a great cook and, happily, she passed a lot of her talent and recipes on to her children.

She is survived by her sister, Mrs. Georgia Dickerson of Savannah, GA; her sons: Bruce, of Dudley, Mass. and his wife Emily, Mark, of North Carolina, and Alan of Ringwood, NJ and his wife Ann; her daughter, Judi of Philadelphia, PA; 7 Grandchildren, Rachel Jachimczyk and Brian Babbitt of Dudley, Sarah and Bradley Babbitt of Ringwood, Jessica Cuevas and Michael Odell of Springfield, and Steven Odell of Lee; and 7 great-grandchildren. Her husband, the late Frederick B. Babbitt of Lenox; her son, the late Gene F. "Rick" Babbitt of Lenox; and her brother, the late Gene Marshall of Henderson, KY, predeceased her.

Friends may call on Monday, September 26, from 5 to 7 in the evening at the Roche Funeral Home, 120 Main Street in Lenox. A memorial service will be held at the Church on the Hill in Lenox on Tuesday, September 27 at 11 O'clock in the morning.

In lieu of flowers, the Babbitt family asks that donations be made in her memory to the Church on the Hill in Lenox or to the Lenox Library Association. Donations may be sent in care of the Roche Funeral Home, 120 Main Street, Lenox, MA 01240.
