Lucent Technologies Announces New Software Enabling Over-the-Air Service Provisioning

SAN FRANCISCO, Sept. 19 /PRNewswire/ -- New leading-edge software from Lucent Technologies enables wireless service providers to offer over-the-air service provisioning (OTASP) capabilities -- including initial activation -- plus provisioning of a host of other innovative wireless features, such as paging and voice mail.

Sprint Spectrum L.P. will be the first customer to use Lucent's OTASP solution, which will be shown at PCS '96 this week.

From a service subscriber's perspective, OTASP takes existing wireless phone technology a step further by offering a secure, cost-effective, easy- for-customers-to-use technology that allows subscribers to activate their wireless phones, select innovative features, and establish account information by phone. With OTASP, subscribers are up and running on wireless networks faster, while revenue flows to service providers sooner.

"With Lucent's end-to-end OTASP solution, wireless service providers can generate incremental savings, while reaching new levels of ease-of-use and security," said Doug Sabella, vice president - Applications Software, Lucent Technologies. "We are committed to providing the technology that makes next- generation wireless service a reality."

Using Lucent's end-to-end OTASP solution, wireless service providers can dramatically expand the availability of their wireless phones to a variety of sales channels, while reducing the costs associated with staffing retail centers. OTASP also facilitates centralized customer care, increasing the efficiency of activation and the provisioning process. Subscribers will be able to purchase wireless phone sets off the shelf and complete a fast, efficient activation -- either on the way home from the store or from the comfort of their own homes -- using the wireless phone.

OTASP provides a more secure solution by restricting the phone's initial use to activation only. Once subscribers have the phone in hand, they can immediately dial a customer service representative who can activate the phone and accept account information. Service providers also can customize the activation process using Lucent's flexible OTASP architecture.

Retailers can maintain a supply of the OTASP phones that are ready to be activated alleviating inventory shortages or shipping delays. What's more, the inventory is interchangeable since the phones are not preprogrammed for use in specific regions.
