Lubricant-free molding.

Contamination from lubricants and frequent maintenance add cost and increase cycle time in the production of parts that require the use of ejector pins, thread cores, or sliders. Bekaert Advanced Coating Technologies reports that its Dylyn/DLC coatings eliminate these problems commonly associated with the use of lubricants. According to the company, a cell-phone manufacturer found that using ejector pins coated with Dylyn/DLC in the molding of cell-phone front pieces was noticeably better than using traditional lubrication. The manufacturer also reported that switching to Dylyn/DLC coating reduced downtime the number of shots before cleaning maintenance was required jumped from 35,000 to 150,000--and that there was virtually no interruption in production as a result of galling. Further, the rejection rate of parts as a result of lubrication contamination decreased from 60% to less than 1%.
