AirTran Airways AirTran Airways CEO Joe Leonard says the carrier plans to increase its ties to Orlando this year. The airline's headquarters is based in Orlando, but it operates its largest hub in Atlanta. The company is also continuing with its bid to purchase Midwest Air Group, a move that would give the combined airline a total of 220 jets. "This is the real deal," Leonard says of the merger potential. "This is a big airline strong enough to defend itself against anybody, coast to coast." Apr 30, 2007

Allegiant Air Allegiant Air, which flies travelers from small cities to Las Vegas and other leisure destinations, said Wednesday its April traffic rose 36.9 percent as capacity expanded by 36.2 percent. May 2, 2007

Midwest Airlines, AirTran Holdings Midwest Airlines today released results of a recent survey of Milwaukee-area frequent travelers showing strong opposition to a takeover of Midwest by AirTran Holdings, parent of AirTran Airways. Nearly two-thirds of survey respondents said they'd definitely not fly AirTran or would avoid flying it if they didn't have to after a takeover. May 3, 2007

Southwest Airlines Southwest's last-minute fares may not be the cheapest, study finds A new University of California, Irvine, study indicates that last-minute fares on Southwest Airlines are more expensive, on average, than fares found through online travel agents. A Southwest spokeswoman noted that most of its customers tend to buy the cheapest tickets quickly and leave the higher fares for last-minute buyers. May 4, 2007

Southwest Airlines Some airlines report weaker April load factors Several airlines have reported lower April load factors. Southwest Airlines, for example, posted an April load factor of 72.3%, down from 76.7% in the same month a year ago. Southwest Airlines flew 5.92 billion RPMs in April, up 3.3% from the year-ago month. Capacity rose 9.6% to 8.19 billion ASMs. AirTran Airways and Continental Airlines also posted lower load factors, while American Airlines said its load factor rose slightly. May 4, 2007

Southwest Airlines Southwest Airlines will launch daily Phoenix-Manchester, N.H., service on Aug. 26 and add an eighth daily PHX-Salt Lake City flight. On Oct. 4 it will start a second daily Las Vegas-Raleigh/Durham flight and a fourth daily LAS-Seattle flight. May 1, 2007

Sun Country Airlines Sun Country Airlines announced that CEO Shaun Nugent resigned effective immediately, citing personal reasons. Petters Aviation President T. Jay Salmen, who was Sun Country's CEO in 2002-06, will serve as interim CEO. Apr 30, 2007

WestJet Airlines Canada can support two national carriers, WestJet CEO says Demand for air travel in Canada is strong enough for two profitable national carriers, WestJet Airlines CEO Clive Beddoe says. He does not expect WestJet's rivalry with Air Canada to deteriorate into an all-out war. WestJet focuses on the budget-conscious traveler, while Air Canada caters to the top tier, Beddoe says.
