European Low Fares Airline Assn. Secretary General John Hanlon said that a dual-till model would allow airports "to monopolize commercial revenues instead of sharing them, in the form of reduced airport charges, with consumers, who generate these revenues," adding that the directive as adopted was a "missed opportunity to introduce targeted, robust and effective regulation of those relatively few dominant airports in Europe that actually need to be regulated." AirBerlin

Airberlin said Saudi Arabian investor Kamal Abdullah purchased 3.1% of the carrier through Moab Investments. Vatas is AB's largest shareholder at close to 18.6%. Jan 16, 2008

Blue1

Blue1 Heathrow to Helsinki. Blue1 will begin daily direct flights to Helsinki from London Heathrow on March 30, replacing the current Stansted service. The Finnish carrier a partner of SAS Scandianvian will operate the flights with two-class MD-90 aircraft split into Economy and Economy Extra. The latter seems to be a low-cost carrier s version of business class it offers use of business class check-in, and the middle seat of the row is left open to give passengers more room. Economy Extra tickets offer greater flexibility too, allowing customers to make last-minute changes or re-bookings on other SAS services if, for example, a meeting is cancelled or moved. It even entitles purchasers to a full refund upon cancellation. Also, members of the SAS frequent flier programme EuroBonus will receive 50% more points per one-way flight when they buy Economy Extra tickets. Jan 15, 2008

Blue1

Blue1 will replace its current Helsinki-London Stansted service with a daily London Heathrow-Helsinki flight from March 30. Route will be operated with an MD-90. Jan 14, 2008

EasyJet

Regulator Clears EasyJet's GB Airways Acquisition. Britain's competition watchdog on Friday approved EasyJet's plans to buy rival low-cost airline GB Airways, deciding the deal would not hinder rivals. The Office of Fair Trading said the fact that GB Airways operates routes under a franchise agreement with British Airways was a key point. "This fact was significant in ruling out concerns based on the loss of potential competition on totally new routes in the future, because under the franchise agreement British Airways has a veto over new routes by GB Airways," the OFT said in a statement. Niki

Niki currently operates eight Airbus A320 family aircraft, increasing to nine in May. It will launch a twice-daily Vienna-Milan Malpensa and a daily Vienna-Belgrade service in March. "We will also increase services on some routes to thrice-daily to satisfy our business customers," Lauda said. Jan 15, 2008

Niki, Airberlin, Airbus

Niki plans to double fleet, profits. Niki, the Austrian low-fare airline that is part of the Airberlin group, converted 10 options on Airbus A320 family aircraft into firm orders as its profits continued to rise. Niki's fleet will increase by 2014 to 20 aircraft. Value of the new order is 500 million ($734.7 million). Lauda said the carrier's 2007 profit doubled to more than 1 million as it transported 1.7 million passengers, up 30% from 2006. He expects a further revenue increase in 2008, to 220 million from 186 million, and a profit of 2.1 million. The Airberlin group holds 24% in the Austrian carrier. Airberlin and Niki have become No. 1 for the first time for flights between Austria and Germany. They operate on nine routes with 300 weekly flights, ahead of both Lufthansa and Austrian Airlines. Norwegian

Norwegian To Offer In-Flight Phone Service. Budget airline Norwegian Air Shuttle said on Tuesday it will offer mobile phone and wireless Internet services on flights later this year. The company will also provide travel information for passengers, broadband phone services and mobile banking. The on-board services, to be launched in the fourth quarter, will be provided by a new subsidiary, Call Norwegian. Jan 16, 2008

Ryanair

Ryanair announced its 25th European base in Birmingham with a host of extra routes. Two Boeing 737-800 aircraft will deliver 20 new services to Denmark (1) France (5), Italy (5), Norway (1), Poland (3), Portugal (1), Slovakia (1), Spain (2), and Sweden (1). Jan 15, 2008

Ryanair

Ryanair fares range on the new routes. The cheapest is to Shannon from just u5 ($10) including taxes, but most others start at u24 ($47) one-way including taxes. Barcelona (one way) at u24, Stockholm (one-way) u24, Dublin (one-way) u10, Marseille (one-way) u24. Ryanair are offering all passengers who buy a return flight on any route from Birmingham before midnight on 17 January a free bonus flight (no taxes, fees or charges) for travel in February to Dublin or Shannon. Ryanair, Aer Lingus

Ryanair has been extremely critical of the Aer Lingus Belfast move, saying the Irish government promised the Shannon service would be maintained when it sold Aer Lingus in October 2006. Ryanair has said it will add extra services from Shannon to Gatwick and Stansted and introduce a Luton rotation to do its bit to make up for the loss of passenger volume . A spokesman told ABTN We re going from four to seven daily flights from Shannon to London within the next 30 days. Jan 15, 2008

Ryanair, Birmingham

Ryanair will set up its 25th European base at Birmingham International in the spring with two Boeing 737-800s operating on 20 new routes to Denmark, France, Italy, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Spain and Sweden. This will be followed by a further eight 737-800s representing an investment of $560 million that the LCC said will deliver 5 million passengers annually. It will launch flights from BHX to Girona and Pisa in April; to Marseille in May; to Billund, Bologna, Dinard, Sandefjord, Poitiers, Porto, Trieste, Reus and Rzeszow in June; and to Biarritz, Bratislava, Bydgoszcz, Gdansk, Olbia, Perpignan, Stockholm Skavsta and Trapani in July.
