Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport Kicks Off New Orleans Satchmo SummerFest Celebration.

NEW ORLEANS -- The Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport, in cooperation with CA One Services, one of the nation's leading airport foodservice and specialty retail companies, will be hosting the official kick-off reception of the Second Annual Satchmo SummerFest on Thursday, August 1, from 6:30 - 8:00 p.m.

The birthplace of jazz continues to commemorate native son and "International Ambassador of Jazz" Louis "Satchmo" Armstrong, one year after the inaugural centennial celebration that heralded the renaming of the airport.

Originally intended as a one-time centennial tribute in 2001, the event's success prompted producers to embrace Armstrong's legacy and continue the festival, making the Satchmo SummerFest the only annual Armstrong-themed festival in the United States.

Taking place at the Louisiana State Museum's Old U.S. Mint in the French Quarter, the free four-day event will feature a birthday celebration that includes Satchmo-inspired musical performances and discussions, exhibits, a jazz mass, activities for budding young jazz fans, and a star-studded line-up of performances.

The free kick-off celebration at the Louis Armstrong International Airport includes a musical performance by Kermit Ruffin and the Barbeque Swingers with singer Tricia Boutte (Sista Teedy) as Louis & Ella (Fitzgerald), who will be performing on a stage in the Delta ticket counter area. The food, provided by CA One Services, will be served via Jazz-themed catering stations in the same area during the performance.

Hors d'oeuvres will be circulated during the first hour, and will include crabmeat au gratin rounds, crawfish cakes, and mini muffalettas. A carving station will feature fried Cajun turkey and roast beef while chafers will include Crawfish Monica, Spinach Madeleine, dirty rice, and blackened chicken. Dessert will be a "Come Blow Your Horn" cake (including a trumpet, handkerchief and umbrella), and Banana's Foster with ice cream.
Among the dignitaries invited to attend:
 * Stanley Crouch, jazz critic and staff writer for The Village Voice
 * Michael Cogswell, Director of the Louis Armstrong House & Archives at
 Queens College
 * Phoebe Jacobs, Executive Vice President of the Louis Armstrong
 Educational Foundation
 * Richard Sudhalter, jazz trumpeter, bandleader and author
