Lotto boost for Sea Cadets.

SEA cadets across the region are celebrating after their headquarters received a PS50,000 lottery grant.

The cash from Sport England's Inspired Facilities Olympic and Paralympic Legacy Fund will go to build an accommodation unit at Derwenthaugh Boat Station at Derwenthaugh Marina, Blaydon, Gateshead.

The boat station caters for 18 Sea Cadet units across the region and acts as a base for sailing, powerboating and rowing.

Victor Sprong, project co-ordinator at the station, said: "The grant from Sport England is tremendous news for the provision of watersports.

"The North East lags behind most of the UK in having high-level facilities and this will help redress the balance."

Derwenthaugh Boat Station is among 33 sports groups in the North East celebrating legacy investments from Sport England to improve facilities. The grants take the number of projects supported by Inspired Facilities to more than 1,000.
