Loss of appetite.

If your appetite isn't what it used to be and you have to force yourself to eat, you're not alone. As we age, our ability to taste and smell decreases, causing a lack of appetite. This can also be due to oral or sinus problems, kidney disease, and even neurological disorders. Taking chemotherapy drugs produces the same result. Or you may have a zinc deficiency. You see, your body uses up more zinc when you're under stress, and just about all of us are stressed.

Twenty years ago, I had tremendous success in restoring the appetite of AIDS patients using zinc supplementation. If you've lost your appetite, you may want to try taking extra zinc for a month. I like zinc picolinate or zinc chelate because they're particularly easy to absorb. You could begin by taking 20 mg three times a day. If your appetite doesn't improve within a month, your appetite may be affected by something else. But this simple remedy is available in all health food stores for less than $10 a bottle.

Your loss of appetite can also be due to the heat from hot summer days. If so, choose cooling foods like fruits and vegetables. Have a protein smoothie for breakfast instead of eggs or cereal, and eat a salad for lunch or dinner. If raw foods don't agree with you, lightly steam vegetables and serve them as a cold salad with vinaigrette dressing.
