OLAF SCHMIDT of Messe Frankfurt on what's in store at next month's Heimtextil Frankfurt

As the first marketing and order platform of the year, Heimtextil (in Frankfurt from January 12- 15, 2011), attracts visitors and exhibitors from all over the world. Said to be the biggest international trade fair for home and contract textiles, Heimtextil has a unique product portfolio, offering textiles for bed, bath and table to product ranges for windows, upholstery, floors, wall and solar protection.

In 2010, 85 per cent of exhibitors came from abroad. The Heimtextil complementary programme features special shows, lectures and competitions that provide additional target-group-specific platforms and offer clear orientation in terms of trends and market development.

We caught up with OLAF SCHMIDT, vice president, Textile Fairs, Messe Frankfurt.

How would you describe the current market? How many registrations have you received so far? We are extremely pleased with the number of registrations received to date. So far we have already reached last year's exhibitor total and, as a result, we are looking forward with great optimism and expectation to the next Heimtextil. The last few years have been marked in part by the restraint resulting from the financial and economic crisis. A market recovery and distinctly positive indicators are now discernable and the industry can again focus on contextual themes.

Sustainability is one of the focal themes. What have you planned in this context? Messe Frankfurt is publishing a Green Directory for the first time. The directory lists exhibitors, who stand out due to the high ecological quality of their products or due to sustainable manufacturing processes. The range of these textiles covers almost every kind of home and household textile products, which means we can offer the industry clear orientation.

The theme of sustainability will be explored in greater depth in a series of lectures in the 'Let's talk about it!' forum in Hall 8 as well as in a special show in Hall 11.1. In addition, a special show under the patronage of the German UNESCO Commission, featuring sustainable bark cloth products, will be taking place in the foyer between Halls 5.1 and 6.1.

Traditionally the Heimtextil Trends and contract-industry events have always been special highlights of the fair. What can visitors and exhibitors expect in 2011? Over the past 20 years, the Heimtextil Trends have established themselves as a key orientation tool for product developers, furnishers and designers in the international textile sector. They precis the very latest textile developments for interior furnishing and decoration. Six international design and style agencies have developed the trend statements for this and picked out the key trends. You can see their trendsetting work on, in the Trend Book and at the Trend Show in Forum 0.

Heimtextil offers the contract business a Contract Guide containing a list of all the exhibiting contract suppliers. Lectures, special shows and competitions shine a light on topical contract business themes.
