Lockdown was eased too early.

Byline: Ian GIBSON Upton

AS CORONAVIRUS cases edge up again and local lockdowns are restored across swathes of the country, it is obvious to most of us that the Government relaxed the lockdown too early.

We were the last country in Europe to impose a lockdown, due to Boris Johnson's indecisiveness, which is why we have the highest number of Covid deaths in Europe, yet we lifted it at the same time as other countries - which had been keeping safe for longer than us.

Scientists warned that this was a mistake, but the Government ignored them, just as it ignored SAGE committee advice to impose the lockdown on March 16 rather than March 23.

It is noticeable how much more successful Scotland and Wales, with their devolved Governments led by Nicola Sturgeon and Mark Drakeford and their more cautious policies, have been in controlling the disease than England has with Boris and Dominic Cummings in charge.

Last Thursday England announced 812 new infections while Wales, Scotland and Ulster had just 34 between them. As I write, Scotland has reported no confirmed Covid deaths for 14 days, and scientists believe that it has between one-seventh and onetenth as many cases of Covid-19 as England.
