MAJOR new Netflix drama Safe premieres this week - starring Dexter's Michael C Hall and Sherlock's Amanda Abbington.

The new thriller from Harlan Coben was filmed during seven months across Manchester and Cheshire last year.

Here we take a look at some of the locations you will spot in the new drama, which is about wealthy families living in a gated community - but even that cannot keep them safe from the secrets and lies that lurk within them all...

Dexter star Hall plays the role of widowed surgeon Tom Delaney, whose daughter (played by former Corrie star Amy James Kelly) goes missing with her older boyfriend.

Amanda Abbington is the police officer who uncovers a spiralling web of intrigue - with her own secrets to hide of course - while Marc Warren is Tom's best friend who also seems to have something to do with the disappearance.

Location manager Mark O'Hanlon was tasked with finding all of the outdoor settings for the drama alongside his team Lois Williams and Ellie Carr.

He said: "It was a big project for me and for the team, as 99.9 per cent of it was out on location. We had chase scenes in Hale and in the Northern Quarter, and we had that interesting mix of the big city lights compared to this gated community which was very much supposed to look like the quintessential British village.

"When people found out Michael C Hall was involved, we did get a different level of fan. Someone came on set and asked if they could have a piece of his hair, and he was like 'no.'.

"Some big Dexter fans had tattoos of him on their body. But it was all very positive and nice, people are pretty cool."

Here we take a look at where some of the scenes were set.

gated community Viewers are immediately introduced to the gated community where the families and friends of Safe all live.

It was not meant to be a specific place, but rather set somewhere in "middle England" and the actually gated community was not real but constructed from a series of scenes at different houses dotted across Manchester and Cheshire.

Mark said: "We found houses around Hale and Hale Barns, but it was quite a task finding a house with a swimming pool, where a lot of the drama is set in the show.

"For Harlen (the American writer) it's quite common for families to have a swimming pool, but in the north west it's not that needed!" They eventually found the perfect house in Stockton Heath, Warrington.

Meanwhile the secluded house of Marc Warren's character was actually nestled in the picturesque village of Rostherne near Tatton Hall in Cheshire.

CHASE SCENES In the opening episode, Hall is seen running down a high street to try and get answers off a young school pal of his missing daughter, and the high street in question was Ashley Road in Hale.

Indeed Hale was used quite a lot in the project, and in later episodes Hall will be seen at Hale train station, while the Con Club in Altrincham was also the setting for scenes on the show.

HIGH SCHOOL The local school is at the centre of much of the drama in Safe. And it was Altrincham Grammar School used as the setting.

Mark said: "The school was really fantastic, and we tried to use their drama department to get some of the girls involved in the filming as well."

BRIGHT LIGHTS OF THE CITY As surgeon Tom's search for his daughter escalates, viewers will see the bright lights of the big city - which was Manchester of course.

There will also be plenty of scenes in the Northern Quarter.
