Locals fall in opener.

SALEM - Tyler Luloy singled in the go-ahead run in the fifth inning as Cascade Paving of Salem handed Emerald Valley a 3-2 loss in the Springfield-area team's Area 3 American Legion baseball opener Wednesday.

Emerald Valley, which dropped to 9-3 overall, led 2-1 before Cascade Paving scored twice in the fifth.

Nick Anderson was 2-for-3 and Barry Humphreys singled in a run for Emerald Valley, which got a solid pitching performance from Danny Sales, who allowed two earned runs in seven innings.

Challengers capture

nonleague victory

The Eugene Challengers warmed up for this weekend's Grant Smith Wood Bat Tournament with a 7-2 nonleague victory over the Eugene Bandits on Wednesday at Swede Johnson Stadium.

Kellen Hobie and Ryan Royster had three hits each for the Challengers, who play East Portland in their tournament opener at 6 p.m. Friday at Swede Johnson. Corey Boosinger earned the victory in relief.

Oregon State signs

three prep wrestlers

Oregon State signed three state champions to wrestling letters of intent during the spring recruiting period, OSU coach Joe Wells announced Wednesday.

Joining the Beavers in the fall will be 141/149-pounder Clint Leonard of Lakeland High School in Post Falls, Idaho, heavyweight Travis Gardner of Parkrose High School and 157/165-pounder Neal Beaudry of Newberg High School.

Beavers' Jarvis

signs with Phillies

Andy Jarvis, who completed his Oregon State baseball career holding or sharing a number of school records, has signed a free-agent contract with the Philadelphia Phillies.

Jarvis, a first baseman, leaves OSU with the school's career records for hits (232), runs batted in (173), total bases (382) and at-bats (725), and he is tied for the record in home runs (34).

This season, Jarvis batted .327 with seven homers and 49 RBIs.
