Living Room Realities.
quirky pieces that fill her home and should complete yours.
Your home reflects who you are. My personal style is Gothic and so my collection at home includes gargoyles or gretosques, eagles and an eagle man, all that have designed by me. Set in sturdy fibre-reincorced plastic, these have been given a marble dust coating for a stony feel and are touched-up by German silver foil. I would recommend that one choose showpieces that are set in fall-resistant fibre but have the lustre of polished stone or ceramic for a grand look.
Also precious to me are pieces gifted to me by my designer friend Andrew Martin. These include a solid wood carved horse and a junk metal gorilla installation. Animal-inspired art is yet another way to bring playful vibrance into the living room and is quite original.
Martin has also welded parts of vehicles and created an eye-catchy installation. There's always more novelty in showcasing inventive, off-beat decor pieces within the home. My personal collection aside, I would recommend that you gradually start building your own collection of unique home decor items. To begin with, your home should boast a collection of fine paintings. If you're not an art person, go through the works of Indian and international painters and decide the art genre and artist that comes closest to reflecting your style. An oil from the 17th century Belgian artist Antonius Sallaert and a live portrait of the 18th century French painter Andre Chenier, add depth to any home.
People living on the coast should avoid steel or chrome-coated products as these are more prone to corrosion. In areas where humidity levels are high, duck down feather should be avoided. Finally, regular vacuuming, brushing and sponging of your upholstery, rugs and furniture is a must.
