Living: Travel: CARS TO GO FULL DISTANCE BY TRAIN.

MORE than 10,000 British motorists put their cars on the train to go across to France the easy way each summer - and next year the numbers are set to rise considerably.

Rail Europe is re-starting services out of Calais to Bordeaux and Biarritz in the peak season (mid-July to early September) - opening up the Pyrenees, Gascony and Atlantic coast areas of France, as well as the Basque country across the French-Spanish border.

A one-way fare to Bordeaux is pounds 265 for car and two-berth sleeper, pounds 319 for car and six people in couchettes.

Corresponding fares to Biarritz are pounds 329 and pounds 389. The main Calais-AvignonNice service gets a longer summer season - April 11 to October 11 - in response to rising demand. And all Rail Europe services get a bar car next summer, serving drinks and snacks, and providing a place to socialise with fellow passengers.
