Liverpool writer brings Corrie to the stage.

CORRIE!, the new comedy written by acclaimed playwright and long-term Coronation Street scriptwriter Jonathan Harvey, is to bring its unique brand of humour to the Liverpool Empire.

Written to celebrate the soap's 50th anniversary, the play condenses five decades of much-loved storylines and characters into a two-hour show. They will include Deirdre Barlow being sent to prison, Brian Tilsley being stabbed and Tracy Barlow killing Charlie Stubbs.

The Liverpool date will be the second of a national tour, following a sell-out run at The Lowry Theatre in Salford last year.

Directed by Fiona Buffini, the show features more than 55 of the soap's favourite characters, including Bet Lynch, Elsie Tanner, Hilda Ogden, Ken Barlow, Jack Duckworth and Gail Platt, played by just six actors.

Details of a former Coronation Street star, who will be appearing in the role of the narrator for the Liverpool dates, is expected to be announced shortly.

As well as a long-standing scriptwriter for Coronation Street, Liverpool-born Harvey created the TV comedy Gimme Gimme Gimme and enjoyed a successful run with his new play, Canary, which featured at the Playhouse last year.

* CORRIE! is at the Liverpool Empire from February 21-26.
