Little Monsters: Create a trio of goofy monster hats using fleece scraps, embroidered faces and in-the-hoop horns.

MATERIALS

+ 1/3 yard each of 2 fleece colors (exterior & lining)

+ Two 5"-squares of fleece

+ White fabric scraps (mouth appliques)

+ Polyester fiberfill

+ Adhesive-backed stabilizer

+ Embroidery designs: face elements & in-the-hoop horn designs (sizes vary; see "Designs")

PREPARE

* Download the Little Monsters pattern and embroidery designs from cmemag.com/freebies until Oct. 31, 2018. Purchase the pattern at shopsewitall.com and the design at machineembroiderygeek.com after the expiration date.

* Print the hat pattern, selecting the baby, toddler or kid size, and cut out the pattern pieces.

* From the exterior and lining fleece, cut four hat tops and one hat band on the fold each.

* With right sides together and aligning the notches, stitch two matching hat tops along one edge, ending at the star dot and leaving the opposite edge open (A).

* Repeat to stitch a hat front and back from the exterior and lining fleece.

HORN EMBROIDERY

* Load the horn designs onto the embroidery machine.

* Hoop one piece of adhesive-backed stabilizer. Score the stabilizer inside the hoop, and then peel away the paper backing.

* Layer the two small fleece squares onto the stabilizer with right sides together.

* Embroider the desired horn design.

* Remove the fleece from the hoop. Trim closely around the horn perimeters, leaving Vs" seam allowance at the lower open end of each horn.

* Turn the horns right side out; stuff with filling.

FACE EMBROIDERY

* Load the eye designs onto the embroidery machine.

* Hoop one piece of adhesive-backed stabilizer.

* Score the stabilizer inside the hoop, and then peel away the paper backing.

* Place the exterior-hat front on the exposed adhesive stabilizer, aligning the hat-front seam with the hoop centerline.

* Select an eye size and position the eye or eyes at least 3/4" from the hat-front lower edge.

* Embroider step one to create a placement line.

* Tape or glue a white fleece scrap over the placement line. Embroider step two to tack the scrap in place.

* Remove the hoop from the machine, but don't remove the project from the hoop. Using applique scissors, trim the excess applique fabric. Return the hoop to the machine, and then embroider step three to satin stitch around the eye shape (B). Repeat to embroider the remaining eye.

* Load the pupil design onto the embroidery machine.

* Decide on the pupil placement. To create pupils in the same location one each eye, mark the center points on each of the eye whites. Or stitch the pupils in different locations for a goofier effect. Stitch the pupil designs and remove the hat front from the hoop.

* Load the mouth designs onto the embroidery machine.

* Hoop one piece of adhesive-backed stabilizer.

* Score the stabilizer inside the hoop, and then peel away the paper backing.

* Place the exterior-hat band right side up on the exposed adhesive stabilizer, aligning the center fold-line with the hoop centerline.

* Embroider the mouth design. Depending on the chosen style, the mouth is either embroidered or appliqued. The embroidered mouths stitch in two steps. The appliqued mouth includes three steps: one for placement, one for tacking the applique fabric and one for the satin stitch edges.

CONSTRUCT

* Place the finished horns along the exterior-hat front upper edge, matching the raw edges; pin (C).

* Stitch the hat front to the hat back along the upper curved edge. Repeat to stitch the lining front and back. Trim the seam allowances.

* With right sides together, stitch the exterior-hat band short ends together to make a circle. Repeat to stitch the lining hat band. Trim the seam allowances.

* With right sides together, stitch the exterior hat band to the exterior hat top, placing the stitched mouth design at the center front (D). Repeat to stitch the lining hat.

* With right sides together, place the exterior hat into the lining and stitch the layers along the open edge, leaving a 3" opening for turning (E).

* Turn the hat right side out. Slipstitch the opening closed.
