Lite honors women sports journalists

Miller Lite and the Women's Sports Foundation (WSF) have honored seven journalists for their outstanding coverage of women's sports at the foundation's annual awards banquet in New York.

The journalism award recipients included: Robert Lipsyte, The New York Times; Christine Brennan, The Washington Post, Dan Debenham and Adrian Karsten, ESPN; Dough Lederman, The Chronicle of Higher Education; Randy Shaver, KARE-TV in Minneapolis; and Julie Vader, formerly of the National.

According to Ann Janikowsky, Miller Lite regional brand manager, the awards program, now in its fifth year, is designed to help the WSF achieve its goal of fair and equal news coverage of women's sports. "Miller support of sporting events and programs recognizes the important role sports play in American life," Janikowsky noted. "These awards encourage participation by women in sports and recognize the role the media plays in focusing attention on the accomplishments of female athletes and issues affecting them."

This year's entries were judged by a panel of journalists which included representatives from Sports Illustrated, Newsday, and ABC-TV.
