Litchfield, Kaitie Afrika: The Little One: the story of a red-tailed monkey.

** LITCHFIELD, Kaitie Afrika The Little One: the story of a red-tailed monkey Black Dog, 2009 unpaged $16.99 pbk ISBN 9781742030906 SCIS 1410747

When Kaitie was four, she lived in Uganda while her scientist mother worked at a sanctuary for orphaned chimpanzees. Living in Entebbe, she attended nursery school each day until lunchtime and relates some of her daily routine. One day an orphaned baby red-tailed monkey was brought to the sanctuary and Kaitie became his 'Mum'. She fed him with a bottle and fruit, let him climb on her and played various games with him until he was old enough to be housed at the Uganda Wildlife Education Centre.

The book is well-designed on cream paper with a faint background graphic of trees, grass and a monkey on the page numbers. Illustrations are full-colour photographs with blurred edges arranged mainly one to a page but occasionally two or three slightly overlapping. Punctuation could have been improved as somebody (the editor?) has a great love of commas and their overuse becomes quite irritating. However the book is visually appealing. A final page contains factual information about this species and the environmental issues it faces.
