Like Hildalgo in 1810, Ring up Friends and Family for Mexican Independence Day; Just in time for the Dieciseis shout out, SBC companies are introducing new prepaid phone cards with TELMEX USA.

LOS ANGELES -- This year, people will have new options for reaching out to friends and family in Mexico to celebrate Mexican Independence day. Just in time for the popular holiday, SBC Communications Inc. (NYSE:SBC) has joined forces with TELMEX USA to announce new, co-branded SBC-TELMEX prepaid phone cards for California residents.

The cards, featuring some of the most competitive rates to Mexico, are available in $2, $5 and $10 denominations.

"We know that Mexico is the top international destination most frequently called in California and understand that many of our customers are looking for the most affordable, convenient and reliable way to remain connected to family and friends," said Rick Resnick, president, SBC International, Mexico. "With the introduction of the SBC-TELMEX prepaid phone cards, we're adding another great choice to our wide variety of products developed specifically with the Hispanic community in mind."

The SBC-TELMEX prepaid phone cards are available at many neighborhood markets and Hispanic businesses throughout California.

The Mexican General Consulate this week praised the cooperation between SBC companies and TELMEX USA.

"The Mexican General Consulate is very pleased that these two companies are joining efforts and are working together to provide new and useful services to the Mexican community," said Consul General of Mexico in Los Angeles, Ruben Beltran. "With this new telephone card, Mexican families benefit from innovative services to maintain their communication with their friends and relatives in Mexico."

California residents can choose from the following recently introduced cards:

--SBC-TELMEX Multifon, a prepaid phone card offering 100 minutes of calling to Mexico City, Guadalajara, and Monterrey, and 80 minutes to the next 200 largest cities in Mexico for $5. Callers to anywhere else in Mexico receive 30 minutes. A 49-cent maintenance fee applies after the first week of the card's use, if the card still contains a balance of minutes, and requires up to an 89-cent payphone surcharge per call.

--SBC-TELMEX La Conocida, a prepaid phone card offering 105 minutes of calling to Mexico City, Guadalajara, and Monterrey, and 75 minutes to the next 200 largest cities in Mexico for $5. Callers to anywhere else in Mexico receive 30 minutes. There is a payphone surcharge of up to 89-cents per call and a 49-cent maintenance fee applies after the first week of the card's use, if the card still contains a balance of minutes. Calls can also be made from Mexico using this card. Also available is a $2 card, which offers 40 minutes of calling Mexico City, Guadalajara, and Monterrey, 20 minutes to the next 200 larges cities, and 15 minutes to all other Mexico destinations. The $2 card does not have a maintenance charge and it expires 90 days after it is first used. Calls from payphones are not allowed.

--SBC-TELMEX La Conocida de Mexico, in $5 and $10 increments, prepaid phone cards offering 150 or 300 minutes, respectively, of calling to Mexico City, Guadalajara, and Monterrey, and 120 and 250 minutes to the next 200 largest cities in Mexico, respectively. Callers to anywhere else in Mexico receive 60 and 120 minutes, respectively. The prepaid card is ideal for callers who choose to use all of the card's minutes in a single call. Otherwise, a 25 percent surcharge will apply to the used minutes, and a 69-cent maintenance fee applies at midnight of the first day of use and weekly thereafter. Calls from payphones have a per call surcharge of up to 89 cents.

--SBC-TELMEX Fiesta Mexico, a prepaid phone card offering 140 minutes to 203 major cities in Mexico, also $5. The prepaid card is ideal for callers who choose to use all of the card's minutes in a single call. Otherwise, a 25 percent surcharge will apply to the used minutes, and a 69-cent maintenance fee applies at midnight of the first day of use and weekly thereafter. There is a payphone surcharge of up to 89-cents per call. Calls can also be made from Mexico using this card.

SBC companies and TELMEX-USA will also offer two additional cards similar to the Fiesta Mexico card with varying call minutes. SBC-TELMEX Multifon Capitales offers callers 180 minutes of calling to Mexico City, Guadalajara, and Monterrey and 100 minutes to the next 200 largest cities in Mexico. SBC-TELMEX Multifon Provincias offers callers 145 minutes of calling to the top 203 calling destinations in Mexico. Both cards, available for $5, can be used to make calls from Mexico.

For consumers who prefer to dial directly from their home telephones, there are many international direct-dialed calling plan options, including offers by SBC Long Distance featuring some of the lowest calling rates to Mexico, Latin America and other countries. The total advertised minutes are available only if they are used in the first call. A service fee of 25% of the value of the minutes used applies in addition to the usage charge for each call, unless all the minutes on the card are used up on the first call. Minutes do not expire.

La Conocida de Mexico $5

If all the minutes on the card are not used on the first day of use, a 69 cents (up to 21 minutes) maintenance fee will be applied at midnight of the first day of use, and weekly thereafter. Up to 89 cents (up to 27 minutes) surcharge applies per call from a payphone.

Provincias $5
