Ligna puts panel processing in the spotlight.


Once again, Germany's Ligna Hannover rewrote the attendance record for international woodworking trade shows. The 97,000 visitors, representing 90 nations, eclipsed the 1989 attendance by 6,000, according to fair organizers.

The show's major attraction were woodworking and logging equipment displays by 1,300 exhibiting companies, covering 117,000 square meters. New product introductions continued to showcase programmable computers as a means to lower labor and downtime costs by speeding up machine setup, providing greater machine flexibility, diagnosing machine malfunctions and allowing for centralized control over machines linked together as automated manufacturing lines.

This trend was particularly pronounced in the area of panel processing, where many machinery manufacturers demonstrated just-in-time production concepts for reducing raw material inventory costs. As computers become more prolific to the industry, they are also becoming more accessible, being integrated into more cost affordable, down scaled versions of machines.

There was also greater emphasis placed on machinery health and safety considerations, including improved dust collection efficiency for panel saws.

This article highlights some of the technical developments in panel processing. Next month's article will focus on machinery for solid wood processing, plus finishing and sanding equipment.

CNC routers/machining centers

CMS demonstrated new CAD-CAM software for use with its CNC machining centers. Included was CMSGRAF, a CAD module that assists the operator in designing tool paths in a simple and effective matter and CMSMACH, a CAM module with which the operator can add all machining instructions required to design and accurately simulate the actual machining process. Both programs can be run on PCs. 316

Biesse displayed the Rover 18, a new generation of point-to-point boring equipment featuring a 7 1/2-hp router motor and a more flexible table design than the Rover 16. 317

Biesse introduced the Rover 325L, a feed-through point-to-point drilling center, which incorporates some of the concepts of the more expensive Biesse Matrix. The 325L can machine an average of five panels a minute for dowels, cams, hinges and other hardware. 318

The 325L was displayed on-line with the Biesse Insermatic, demonstrating just-in-time manufacturing possibilities. The Insermatic can insert up to eight different types of functional and assembly hardware on an average of three panels per minute. The system can be manually fed, be linked to a PC or CIM network, or operate using bar coding. 319

Biesse also introduced the Rover 464, which represents its biggest point-to-point machining center. Features include 64 different tools for both vertical and horizontal machining, including up to seven router heads. 320

IDM - from Quattro Tech - showed the PF-3116, a feed-through CNC router with five heads and a grooving blade. 322

Panel sizing equipment

Holz-Her introduced the Super-Slide, the company's first sliding table saw. The machine features adjustable table height, single-lever scorer adjustment and digital displays. 323

Holz-Her also showed improved dust collection on its vertical panel saws. The saws feature five ports for vacuum extraction of dust to a centralized dust collector. 328

The Scheer FM 14 panel saw from Richard T. Byrnes Co. has been improved to include a rack-and-pinion back fence, computer controlled cross side pressure and the ability to load panels from any of three sides. 329

Holzma displayed the HPP 91-3100 panel saw designed for small and medium sized companies. It features a jump-up scoring unit for splinter-free cutting of postformed edges. 330

Giben (Stiles Machinery) introduced the PIOS II micro controller for its CNC panel saws. The system features improved diagnostics, a maintenance schedule feature and optimizing software. 331

Altendorf has added new optional digital electronics for quicker and more accurate setting of the rip fence on its sliding table saws. 332

Atlantic Machinery offers the Griggio line of horizontal panel saws which feature postforming scoring units, electronic programming and double hold-down clamps. 333

Edge treating

Homag displayed an improved version of its postforming system, available from Stiles Machinery. The system eliminates the need to glue softforming material. Using special tools, the top section of a laminated panel is trimmed and shaped, leaving the bottom side intact. The remaining melamine is heated and wrapped around the postformed edge. 334

The IMA QuadroMat from Roger Stiles Assoc. features a shuttle device that returns the workpiece after it has been edgebanded. This allows one man to load and unload workpieces. At Ligna, IMA demonstrated a one-man cabinet shop incorporating the QuadroMat and a CNC machining center. Routed and drilled pieces were fed onto the edgebander; while the pieces were being banded, the operator assembled cabinets. 335

Polymac from Quattro Tech displayed a machine that grooves, glues and inserts T-molding in one operation. 336

The new Brandt series KD 66/68 edgebander series from Altendorf America can apply up to 5mm edge thickness and up to 3mm PVC coil material. 337

The Ocmac HS 22 from Danckaert Woodworking Machinery is a single-sided automatic edgebander for low volume users. It can apply solid wood, HPL, aluminum, wood veneer and PVC from strips or coils. 338

Ocmac (Danckaert) has also added new electronic systems to its model S/HF 75-20 and D/HF 600-30 edgebanders for controlling top pressures, feed speeds and end trim units. 339

Stefani showed a preforming system in which the laminate of the panel profile is made using the excess material left over from the profiling of straight panels. Like postforming, the system uses PVAc glues to avoid remelting of the glue in high humidity and temperature situations. The system eliminates additional moulding, sanding and gluing operations. 340

SCMI has a new range of Selecta edgebanders aimed at small to medium sized companies. Features include high-speed operating groups for higher quality finishes and capacity to use strips or coils. 341

The new Olimpic Formula edgebander from Tekna features new glue pot design, and a new cut-off saw with machining speeds up to 25m/minute. 342

Overlay equipment

Wemhoener featured two new membrane presses: the KT-M 13/28-200 and the larger, more automated KT-M 34/ 17-440, which has greater production capacity. Both models can apply thermal plastic foil and veneer lamination on 3-D profiled core materials. Both can also be equipped for double-sided operation. 346

Kuper, represented in the U.S. by Stiles Machinery, displayed a new system for butt joining veneers. The FL/S can join veneers in thicknesses of approximately 0.4mm to 3mm using urea or PVAc glues. Feed speed is 8 to 50m/minute. 347

Kuper also displayed a new veneer patching machine. Small defects are removed and replaced in one swift operation. 348

Stefani Group America offers the Techno Systems edgebanding laminating and slitting machine RDM 330/2. It will combine a finished melamine decorative laminate with one or more kraft paper backers using a PVAc adhesive. The machine can also slit continuous laminate into specific widths for edgebanding, laminating and softforming. 349

Josting showed a cabinet roll-front cutting machine with a cutting width of 1,280mm or 1,780mm. Panels with linen texture glued on the back are cut on the machine one after the other. 350

Hymmen showed a new version of its Isopress - Type DVP. This double-belt bonding press is designed for laminating furniture components with a variety of materials and sizes. The DVP incorporates improvements to reduce energy and glue costs by approximately 50%. 351

Materials handling equipment

The Eurogroup, represented in the U.S. by Quattro Tech showed a modularly constructed stacking and destacking device. The lightweight aluminum construction allows for easy reconfiguration in the event of expansion. 352

PHOTO : Attendance was healthy, but comparatively thinned, by day six of the seven-day fair that attracted a record 97,000 visitors.

PHOTO : Biesse has added an automatic tool changer to its Rover 342 machining center. The changer can choose from up to 15 different tools; an average change is seven seconds. The tools are stored in a hive located on the frame of the machine, lessening weight on the spindle head. 314

PHOTO : Holzma exhibited the 26/ 1-CNC boring and inserting machining center. Operations include face drilling, horizontal drilling, grooving, construction drilling and automatic insertion of fasteners, hinges and other hardware. 315

PHOTO : SCMI introduced the Routron Super CNC machining center with automatic tool change. The machine has a turret capable of holding up to 10 tools and is capable of routing, horizontal and vertical drilling, profiling and other operations. 321

PHOTO : The Morbidelli Author from Tekna features an automatic tool-change to reduce downtime. Machining operations include cutting, routing, boring, scoring, profiling and sanding. 324

PHOTO : Schelling displayed the FW-Unique cut-to-size saw featuring automatic feeding and designed for custom operations or large-scale production. Cycle times are reduced because while one book of boards is being cut, the next book is pushed off and aligned. 325

PHOTO : Striebig's new Automat II vertical panel saw from Colonial Saw was a Gold Medal Award winner at the Munich show. It features a closed frame and back system vacuum suction at the cutting blade for improved dust collection. It also has a center shelf for cutting smaller panels. 326

PHOTO : IDM showed the Euromatic 1-45 featuring new scraping units, standard on all of its edgebanders, available in the U.S. from Quattro Tech. In addition to scraping excess glue, the units help eliminate chatter marks on rounded edges. IDM also displayed new collectors for removing PVC strip waste from the cutterheads. 327

PHOTO : Buerkle showed the Multiform Press, which functions like a membrane press, except it works without the membrane for thermoforming of a vinyl overlay to a substrate. This patented system, available in the U.S. from European Woodworking Machinery, is said to use less heat and less pressure, and thus can be used to thermofuse vinyl on fragile substrates, including honeycomb. Plus, sharper corners are possible than with a traditional membrane press. The press can also be used with a membrane to thermoform veneer; changeover is about three minutes. 343
