Lifeboat 'blessing' today.

NEWBIGGIN'S Blessing of the Lifeboat service in being held today.

The very popular 'Blessing' will take place in the lifeboat station at 3pm with the service undertaken by Newbiggin lifeboat Chaplin.

The lifeboat blessing is an established tradition in the lifeboat calendar here with the service very much as a preamble to next weekend's Lifeboat Day.

Refreshments will be served in the lifeboat station after the blessing.

Newbiggin Lifeboat Day gets under way at 1.30pm with a variety of stalls and attractions in and around the lifeboat station. There will be displays and demonstrations undertaken by the lifeboat subject to operational demands throughout the afternoon.

Stalls include coffee and tea, tombola, souvenirs, bric-a-brac, kids' rides with lots of other entertainment on the day. Throughout the afternoon there will also be live entertainment with West Coast Band and Steel-By-The-Sea.

There is ample free parking at Church Point next to Newbiggin Maritime Centre and this promises to be a busy day for the coastal community with a variety of events taking place.

Future volunteers will also be invited to volunteer at Newbiggin RNLI as part of the lifesaving team.

Mark Hopkins, RNLI Volunteer Lifeboat Operations Manager, explained: 'Only 10% of our new recruits come with professional maritime experience, our current lifeboat crew is testament to this as we have a builder, car mechanic and a surveyor. The RNLI provides comprehensive training to turn ordinary people into lifesavers and by volunteering, people will gain some fantastic experience, knowledge and skills with the RNLI in Newbiggin."
