HARD-HITTING words from Labour MP Jess Phillips, who told MPs that life for some women in the UK today was like that in The Handmaid's Tale, a horrifying TV drama.

The show, based on a novel, portrays a world in which women are held captive and forced to become pregnant.

Birmingham Yardley MP Phillips, who worked for a domestic abuse charity before becoming an MP, told the House of Commons: "I have met victims of human trafficking brought to this country for their ability to bear children and reap the financial benefits for their slave owners.

"The Handmaid's Tale is not a dystopia to me. I have met women whose wombs kept them captive."

The show, on Channel 4, has received rave reviews.
