Libya-U.S.-Obama.

Rajeh Khoury, a columnist with AN NAHAR newspaper, criticized U.S. President Barack Obama for indecisiveness in attempts to topple Libyan leader Moammar Gaddafi. "Is it necessary that there must always be another Benghazi city in any country other than Libya, whose 700,000 population is facing a brutal massacre at the hands of another tyrant like Moammar Gaddahi, for America to feel that the world's conscience might be tarnished and that it must act with its allies to prevent the massacre?" Khoury said in his column on Wednesday. "This question was raised by many in the world on Tuesday after hearing President Barack Obama's speech which tried to draw for the U.S. foreign policy a closed circle in the form of a question mark, whereby no one knows really whether the 'change' which Obama has chosen as a slogan for his presidential battle will lead America to additional retreat?" he said. Obama once again ruled out sending in ground troops or directly bringing about regime change by toppling Gaddafi. "To be blunt, we went down that road in Iraq," Obama said in a televised address Tuesday.

The international coalition has been launching airstrikes on Libya in an attempt to bolster the rebels' campaign against Gaddafi. "It is not exactly clear where America is heading now and how will it establish the foundations of its foreign policy. Will it be on the basis of the principles and values as was the case during the days of Dwight Eisenhower, or on the basis of interests and benefits as has been happening since the sixties of the last century?" Khoury asked. "But it is completely certain that since the eruption of the tsunami of 'change' which is sweeping the Middle East region, it has been proved once more that hesitation and vagueness dominate the American follow-up of this huge development which this region has not known for half a century," Khoury said.
