SHAMI Chakrabarti, director of civil liberties and human rights organisation Liberty, is to be guest speaker at Birmingham Law Society's annual pro bono event.

A qualified barrister, Ms Chakrabarti was a panel member for the Leveson Inquiry, the judicial inquiry into the culture, practice and ethics of the UK press, which focused on the phone hacking scandal.

She is also chancellor of Oxford Brookes University, chancellor of the University of Essex, honorary professor of law at the University of Manchester, visiting fellow of Nuffield College, Oxford, and a master of the bench of Middle Temple.

Ms Chakrabarti's new book, On Liberty, examines the threats to our rights and freedoms post 9/11, including an examination of privacy laws and anti-terrorism legislation.

It is her first book, and will be published in October.

Ruth Minnis, chair of the BLS's pro bono committee, said: "Shami is the undisputed face of human rights protection in the UK, known for her work in the defence and promotion of our civil liberties in parliament, the courts and wider society.

"We are privileged to have secured her for our annual pro bono event."

The event gives members of BLS the opportunity to meet with charitable organisations and advice agencies who need help providing legal advice. Members are invited to volunteer their time and expertise to assist vulnerable people.

It takes place on Thursday October 16 at the Birmingham office of law firm Mills & Reeve and is sponsored by St Philips Chambers and Wesleyan for Lawyers.
