Libertas is rolling out Rx vitamins.

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. -- In the wake of a shortage created after a major manufacturer discontinued its line of vitamins for patients with malabsorptive conditions, at least one supplier has begun filing the void with a new multivitamin with vitamins A, B, D, E and K plus zinc.

Libertas Pharma Inc.'s prescription vitamins, which became available in the fall, give patients what marketers say is "a cost-effective option for those requiringA, B, D, E and K multivitamin supplementation." They say the introduction of these vitamins--designed for use by patients with such conditions as cystic fibrosis, chronic pancreatitis, Crohn's disease and diabetes mellitus--will ensure that the market has a reliable source to support the continuity of care with this patient population.

The company says that the new vitamins, which use water-miscible forms of the fat-soluble vitamins to improve absorption, are gluten free and are not formulated with food dyes.

Libertas Pharma is offering the vitamins in chewable tablets.
