Libel damages slashed.

A MERSEYSIDE businessman has had pounds 350,000 libel damages cut to just pounds 30,000 after a hearing at the Court of Appeal.

Alan Campbell, a former millionaire who once ran the Southport-based All White taxi firm, won the payout from the News of the World newspaper in October.

A jury had decided that the newspaper had falsely branded him a paedophile when Mr Campbell, 61, of New Cut Lane, Halsall, sued the publication over a story which appeared in December 1995.

The case centred on an hour-long colour video which showed Mr Campbell engaged in sexual activity with another man.

The man who gave the video to the News of the World, who Mr Campbell said was an unscrupulous former business partner, claimed the other person in the film was only 15. But the court was told that his true age was 30.

Mr Campbell had sought additional damages believed to be in the region of pounds 1.5m.

But the Appeal Court yesterday cut the original award to pounds 30,000 and made cost orders against Mr Campbell.

A spokesman said: ``The News of the World is delighted with the Court of Appeal judgement in our favour We sincerely hope that the Attorney General will take note of the extremely serious findings and launch an appropriate investigation.''
