Liam to hit back of net in Leeds clash at Sheffield.

Byline: OPEN CHECK Jonathan Kay

CUIL LIAM is in terrific form and Ken Hewkin's dog can pass a stern test to make it four wins in a row when he goes in the pick of three BresMed Northern Sprint trial stakes over 280m at Sheffield tonight (8.58, live on SIS).

It is always a brave decision to oppose United Leeds round here but his draw in four is not ideal and offers little or no margin for error at the start, whereas the selection is set for a smooth run on the outside and can assert by halfway.

John Walton's Flashing Bolt has both less to do in the 7.58 over the same trip and also a cracking make-up to boot, while Gerry Ballentine's Tin Soldier claimed a decent scalp when beating Mays Teejay in a Nottingham final last week and can follow up to take the first sprint trial stakes of the evening at 7.11.

Ballentine's Crinkill Scholar finished fourth behind his kennelmate in that Nottingham contest and may be well suited by the step back up in trip when he goes in the 7.42 over 480m.

Elaine Parker's Swift Champagne has not raced since June 9 when he powered through to win over the course and distance in an excellent 28.73sec (+10), but he looked sharp in a recent sprint trial and has to be fancied in the 7.26 over 500m. Parker should also strike with in-form Biddys Fire in the 8.43 over 500m.

Golden Billy has joined Steve Hewitt since winning for Barrie Draper seven days ago but there seems no reason to oppose him in his hat-trick bid in the 8.13 over 500m all the same, while former kennelmate Droopys Cortez can also make it three in a row when he goes in the 8.28 over 660m.

Another greyhound making a debut for a new trainer is Van Frankie, who has joined Shawfield handler Pam Weir and does not look over-burdened in the 9.14 over 500m.

First of the night's opens is a 500m contest at 6.38 in which Draper's Sharp Mover has a great draw to work from on the wide outside and can prove strongest all-round despite this also being his first race in more than a month.

Trap six could also provide the winner of the 6.56 over 480m where Sean Davy's Imaginetheimpact can reverse June 23 form with Roedhelmfirebird by starting better and making all.
