A SINGER from Coventry has landed a dream role in hit West End musical Wicked.

Liam Tamney, aged 23, of Chadwick Close, Mount Nod, made his debut this week in the popular show which is a prequel to the classic Wizard of Oz.

He is understudy to the lead character Fiyero, as well as singing and dancing as part of the ensemble at the Apollo Victoria Theatre in London.

He was about to finish his three-year training at Lanes Performing Arts School in Surrey when he was snapped up by theatre bosses.

The former Cardinal Wiseman pupil, said: "I went to audition in London for High School Musical, but wasn't sure if I wanted to do that, so I was really pleased when Wicked came up.

"I had three auditions and had to send a film to bosses in America who made the final decision.

"When I first heard I had got the part I was absolutely over the moon as it is very rare for a graduate to go straight into the West End.

"Wicked is such a huge show and I still feel gobsmacked that I am going to be part of it - it's amazing."

Liam went to the Allesley School of Dance and was also a member of the Youth Operatic Group in Coventry.

He was originally set for pop stardom after he was offered a record deal, but when it fell through he took up a place at Lanes. Every year at the college they had a singing competition judged by theatre professionals including Ruthie Henshall from Dancing on Ice, which Liam won three years on the run.

Liam said: "As well as singing, we learn all kinds of dance, including tap, ballet, jazz and modern and put on lots of productions so we are trained to work in the West End.

"I'm really looking forward to Wicked because I have always wanted to perform and my mum says I was born singing.

"As well as being in the show every day, I have to rehearse hard so that when Oliver Tompsett, who plays the lead, is off sick or on holiday, I can take over. My mum Brenda was in the audience on the first night, along with 20 of my family and friends so it was really exciting."
