Letter: Your view - House homes in on justice; Comment OF THE DAY.

Byline: Fred McManus

STRATHCLYDE Chief Constable Stephen House should be commended, not criticised, for speaking the truth about Scotland's soft touch justice system.

Law-abiding Scots are sick of soft options for criminals, of which early release from prison and substituting community service and fixed penalties for effective, retributive punishment are merely some of the latest political wheezes.

As for our democratic regime of elected politicians, it is their ineffectual meddling with and watering down of anything which resembles punishment over the last 40 years which has led to the level of violence and criminality about which the Chief Constable - rightly - publicly expresses his concern.

More power to your elbow Mr House, it is time your senior colleagues stepped down from their ivory towers and echoed your views.
